1819 Sovereign Auction

Big rarity here too.... and it's a straight up auction. I can vouch for that.

I'm not familiar with the rarity of these. How many exist?

Mintage was 3,574 according to Marsh.

Quote from his book "The Gold Sovereign (Golden Jubilee Edition 2002):

"..... as I mentioned in 1980 I could only recall one sovereign of this date after many years searching. This piece had been holed and was generally in poor condition, so nearly 20 years have passed and it seems that only two more examples ..... have appeared. The best of these in 1998 .... Sotheby's .... GVF and it was indeed a fine specimen and probably the best of the six coins that are known to exist. The hammer price was an incredible £50,000........ the rarest within the whole soveriegn series."

The dots (....................) are where he is rambling.

Lloyd, do you by any chance know the seller? I wonder why he has such incredibly, and in my opinion, inexcusably poor scans.

He probably thinks they're ok ..... there's one small time dealer online who sends me worse scans and says he can't see what's wrong with them....

    Beats me.
