What's going on with Peace dollars?

I've got an 1922 ANACS 66 and would like to pick up as many issues in 65 as I can. Generally I've seen them go for $50-$80 but recently you can't get the three common dates (22-24) in 65 for less than $100. Even the 64s that typically sold for $25-$30 are now selling for $40+.

Has the public just discovered the Peace?

FWIW, I think collectors have turned to the Peace Dollar series as value-added coins. With everything else skyrocketing in price, high-end Peace $$ were neglected and then discovered.

The January issue of The Velvet Tray (by DHRC) mentioned them as good choices to pick up in high grades, and the March 2004 Coin Values supplement in Coin World had an excellent article on them (also saying they are under-rated).

I am also looking to pick up some nice specimens as the budget allows. I bought a PCGS 1922-P in MS64 from David Lawrence in September and it was $42.

    Cheers!

This is something I brought a few weeks ago on this forum. Pay close attention, and you see more and more threads about peace dollars. More people asking questions, posting pics, VAMS, etc. Three or four months ago, If I put a post up asking a question about them, I got two or three replies.

They are also shooting up in price. Ebay has had some SERIOUS bidding going on at the key dates in higher grades. They've been in Morgan's shadow for soooo long. And now its their turn.

I am not a big fan of the Peace dollar, but I do think thier is some hidden value in several of the dates. And as mentioned, I have seen quite a few articles on them recently in several publications. An article or two, usually gets several folks lookin harder and buying a series, which in turn dries up supply and raises price.

    I've been buying them all!image

Seriously, I do think that Peace $s are way undervalued compared to Morgan $s. MS65 Peace $s are how much rarer then Morgans overall? And while people have realized for example that some common date Morgans such as 1921's are tougher then normal in 65 and 66, those premiums still haven't been seen for "common" Peace $s that are actually very tough in 66, and sometimes tough to find nice MS65s. Look at what you can get the toughest Peace $ dates for and them compare them to just about any other series from the same general area. I have been trying to only buy nice, mostly white or preferably "Blast" white coins for my Reg set, and many dates are very tough to find nice looking. Right now, I'm interested in a "Blast" PCGS MS65 1925 P if anyone has one available at a decent price.

Personally I think Peace $s could have quite a ways to run if people would start pursuing them more aggressively. Whether or not that will happen, we will have to wait and see.
