Updated Mercury dime set

PTVETTERPTVETTER Posts: 5,977 ✭✭✭✭✭
I just had a chance to upgrade two dimes in my set. I was shoping for a 1916-D but can't seem to find one that fits my standards and cost.
The two updates didn't do much but was nice to do something with my set. It's been tooo long since I did anything with it.

    Pat,

It is nice to see some red on with the Mercs! The coins needed to complete the sets seem to get tougher and tougher to fill in the holes.

I have been saving my funds for the Baltimore Show next week. Hopefully there will be some red. Pat, how big are you going on the 16-D you are looking for? That is one issue I am wrestling with myself. I will probably end up in the XF/AU category, unless prices keep going crazy.,

I'm looking at a High end AU or maybe MS
I prefer a very nice AU58 with full bands over a MS60/61 thats ugly

    Pat,

    Congrats on the upgrades.image

I haven't decided what to do about the '16D, either. It might be an XF or AU, or it might be a 64FB. It would be fun to own a MS coin, but I could buy a lot of other coins for the difference in price between MS and AU. As our Registry sets near completion, it'll be interesting to see if there's going to be upward price pressure on high-grade circ '16-D's. The combined AU50-58 pop is about 160, so it seems that there's an adequate supply, as long as not too many of us are chasing them at the same time.

    congrat's Pat. imageimage

Jim, the amount of MS pieces also does not justify the high prices for 16-D's - your concern is mine too image Time will tell.

As I look at the Mercury dime set, it seems that higher grade(MS66, 67,68FB),dimes just are not in the market place. The few that are seem priced just out of reach or over priced. As with all collectible coins nice coins bring a nice price. I still need a few dimes which should not be that expensive, but I can't find them. I hope other mercury set members are having better luck. It's more work than fun when you get down the final 20%.

The ANA in Aug should bring out a few and I just may have a shot at that time!

Come on guys. Someone throw down the $42,000 that Heritage wants for the 16D on their site. No problem, hey?

Pat I think we are to picky when looking for coins, which is a good thing in my opinion. Being loyal to the series makes us very aware of price, grade and exactly what the look of the coin should be for each persons set. Heck if just anything would do the coins are available.

Case in point is a coin that was on Ebay last night. The price and grade were correct but the "Look" was all wrong. Passed on the date again. image

Keep hunting for just the right coins, they will show up.

very true, I for one would have likely had a complete set by now too. I'd like to know that if and when I wanted to sell - that there would be more interest due to the higher quality examples for each grade that I stubbornly put together.
