Three 1975 coins in a 1976 Proof Set?

Just received three 1976 proof sets from an ebay auction. First one is nice but the other two had a 1975 cent, nickel and dime! The seller is "confounded" since he bought them "directly from the mint" way back when.

I know this is a dumb question, but are these ultra rare (Pop = 2) mint proof set errors? Anybody ever heard of this? My guess is they've been tampered with, although there are no signs of "forced entry."

This thread is not a joke, though it may sound like one. I'm really curious.

Proof sets with the dual dated (1776-1976) quarters, halves and Ike dollars were issued in both 1975 and 1976. The 1975 sets should have the Type I Ike, and the 1976 sets should have the Type II Ike. Has the therapy helped yet? image

    I'm with Rich--you rec'd 2 1975 sets, and 1 1976 set!

  • Thanks a bunch! I learn something new here every day! I thought the seller was ripping me off, but now I realize he didn't know that the dual date 76's were issued in both the '75 and '76 sets. In other words, he was as clueless as I was!

Now, in the interest of furthering my education, what is the difference between a Type I and Type II Ike?

BTW richbeat, my therapy is progressing nicely - I almost feel like my old numismatic self again!

Look at the lettering on the reverse. The Type 1 (issued in 1975) has wider lettering than the Type 2 (issued in 1976)
