a nice thing happened in numismatics today

We had family over the house today for my sons 14th b-day. My 12 year old niece was coming and I was told she wanted to show me a funny state quarter. She showed it to me and it was a slightly off center coin. We talked about it a bit .When we were done i went to my room and found a couple of old whittman folders for cents.1941 to 1973 and 1974 to pres.(1986), circulated.
We sat for almost an hour looking at the coins thru a triplet and explaining about mint marks and such. She asked me about what coins they used during the revolutionary war ? I was abel to take out my Breens Encyclopedia of U.S. and Colonial Coins and show her alot of pictures. I am sure I enjoyed it as much as she did.
It couldn't help but make me think of an uncle of mine who when I was little would bring his chess board to family parties. We would play for hours. I always looked forward to playing and now play with my sons. Joe

great story! Good for you! Reminds me of the hours I spent as a little kid looking through a magnifier at my Granddad's wheat pennies and Mercury dimes (sniff).

  • Great story! I bought a couple of pounds of "unsearched" wheat cents and a Whitman folder for my daughter when she was 8 years old. I threw in a couple of IHC's before she looked throuh them She loved it, and when she found the first IHC, you should have seen the look on her face!! "Dad!! Dad!! What's this....?!?)

    She's now 12 and I think she's hooked!

Really cool, Joe. I wish I could have been a fly on the wall to watch the light in their eyes.

  • 'Nother quick one - Two years ago my Niece graduated high school (oldest Niece or Nephew) and I bought her a birth-year proof set (about $8.00) - She still mentions it to my brother!! I'm doing it for all of my Nieces and Nephews as they graduate high school. A small gift, but it makes an impression!

Maybe they'll be sparked into collecting?

    What a rewarding experience!

Joe, this is yet another display of class from you. Always take time out to teach and encourage. I get more out of it than the kids, most of the time!

This reminds me that I still have two "wheat hoard" requests to complete for board member YN's. I will get it on my list to get done this week.

  • Good story!

Yesterday, my grandson Aaron met me at the coin shop. He immediately told Vince the owner that he had $12 dollars to spend and would like to try to buy a nice proof set. So, Vince got out a box full of proof sets. Aaron would open each pack and then put it back in the box. After about a dozen sets, Vince asked him just exactly he was trying to find. Aaron politely told him that if the coins were not cameo, he wasn't interested in them. He eventually settled for a gem set of 79's for $11. He was showing them off to family and friends the rest of the day.....Ken ....PS, Aaron is only 8 years old....
