Wondering if I should Grade a vintage set

Was wondering what would be the best way to grade a vintage set of cards. Send in the entire set? Piece meal? etc The set in question is a 52 Bowman set that I have had for at least 20 yrs. Average grade ex/mnt some better some worse. Any opinion on this is greatly appreciated.
Good for you.

I'm in the same boat - I'm thinking I may not want the same guy grading my whole set....what if he didn't like his breakfast that day?

  • i would send in 25- 50 cards at a time and mix the grades. the lower graded cards going first on the invoice these will make the better grades look better. it's not an exact science but it seems to work for me (or at least i think it does) .

i have never graded an entire set but, i would never think of sending a whole set or all my submissions in at once, the reason being that you do not want the "grader of death" evaluating all your cards.

good luck! and that 52 bowman is IMO a masterpiece on par with the best topps issues of the 50's. enjoy it and may the PSA gods smile upon you.

Thanks Highend I appreciate your opinion.
    Good for you.
  • Cherry pick the 25-50 best cards and have them graded first. If the grades disappoint, you will not be out that much and can reassess if you want to go forward with a 5/6 or 6/7 or whatever set.

On the other hand, if you score big and realize your remaining raw cards aren't quite as nice, you can either (a) sell the studs and replace them with cards more consistent with the remaining ones, or (b) buck up and head for the high end of the Registry.
  • toppsgun, good idea.
I am pondering the same as I have a boatload of 69 FB commons that are from vending that I want to get graded. (time for a registry jump!)
I can't decide how to do it, but pull out the 9 shots and send those in first is a good one.

I think they get pickier the longer they look at them (cards from same set) as well.
I also arrange cards (from the same set) from worst to best. Who know?

Any other submission strategies? We all have them. Scott

I would agree. Break that set into as many different submissions as possible. It's kinda the same as deversifying your stocks.
  • i would have to agree with Toppsgun. this will give you the best idea of your cards without draining your funds.

ps. if you do end up with 7's (52 Bowman) that you don't want i will gladly purchase them from you.

Thanks for all the opinions, I think I will do what I did with my 55 topps set that is grade just the HALL OF FAMERS within the set. That way I will have the most important cards authenticated and graded and hopefully stored well too. Thanks again for all the input.
    Good for you.
