I apologize for the undignified use of multiple exclamation points, but I went to a tri-annual collectors show today (cards, comics, paperbacks, artwork, non-sports, "railroadiana", Hot Wheels, etc.) and made myself a nice find. I was mainly looking for new Frank Thomases and Mark Priors (of which I actually found many, thanks), but also keeping my investing eye open. One dealer from whom I usually less than $10 worth of stuff at each show had, right on the top of one of his myriad stacks (subdivided by league, division, team, rookie status, college alumnality, or cardmaker, depending) a 2002 Donruss Elite Alexis Rios rookie. After looking at a couple other things I ask to see that stack, and after hemming and hawwing awhile, I ask how much he wants for it. He reaches for his outdated Beckett and after a minute of brow-furrowing, he says,"$75." I do my impression of Bill Murray in Rushmore when Max Fischer asks him for $35,000, and say,"OK."
It was my only major card score of the day. I did pick up 36 decent VG 55 Bowmans for my set (10 years in the making), and I found many nice comics, some of which are flippable, but I was glowing all day about that Rios. It's nearly mint, with a tiny touch of white on one corner. I'm so happy I may keep it, a trophy in testament to my card spotting skills. The only thing that would have made it an even greater triumph is if I had haggled him down to $70.

i didnt claim it was "do" rare or special.. you felt the need to respond to Helionauts post with a negative sounding post of your own..
i thought my post was clear and to the point, but somehow you translated it into "so special and.. do rare"..
let me say it again in case you still dont understand.. i never claimed the card was rare (card is numbered to 1000), vintage (we all know its 2002), or special.. I only claimed that Helionaut made a sweet find for his $70+ and that it was a good deal, as you can see HERE the cards are bringing near $200 on ebay..
please let me know if this post is easier for you to comprehend.
Sorry, "do" was a typo....should have been "so"
If I bought something that I really like and paid about 1/3 book for it - I call that Miller time! I bought a GU Palmeiro bat last night and got it for about 1/3 off of PSA/DNA value and I was really excited.
So......what's on your mind?
Mike
I was just wondering what was so special about this 2002 card. By all means, I was not meaning to be critical. I am very glad that helionaut got a great deal. We should all be so lucky with our desires.
There is one right now that is at $96 with 5 hrs to go. That is the one to watch to determine if his cards are slipping. If they aren't right now, they will be shortly if he can't get a hit. Lots of peopel are holding their breath right now. It's still early, but I am sure they would rather he had a few hits at this point.
I have been the one preaching it all along. Why pay 2x what Beckett has the card listed for currently because of pure hype and speculation? My advice would be to sell his cards right now for the $$$ you can get. The room for profit on this card has closed long ago. What are all the people who are buying these cards at $150-$180 a piece thinking? Does anyone really think that this card will go to $300-$400 so that they can make a profit. Investing that much $$$ per card better bring back more than just $10-$20 down the road.
I like Quiroz and he hasn't showed much yet either, but I am quite sure that he will be playing this year. If he gets hot, the Bowman Chrome rookies I am paying $1.50-$2 a piece for now will go up to at least $10, or 5x what I paid. I plan on owning about 30-40 of them before the season starts which would mean a profit of around $240-$320 if I am right about him.
Now, the Rios would have to go to close to $1,000 in order to get back 5x your investment. Never going to happen. Also, my initial investment for all 40 of the Quiroz Chrome would still be less than half of what people are paying right now for the '02 Elite Rios RC.
To each their own, but think about it before you start shelling out lots of $$$$ for this guy ( Rios ). He isn't doing much of anything yet....
