Grade my Morgan

I bought this coin this AM because I liked the eye appeal and strong strike. Give opinions please on a grade and what would be a good price raw. I'll tell later what I paid...Ken

Very solid 64, slightly better than average strike for this date. $35 or less and you did very well.

The reverse looks great, but depending on how the obverse looks in hand...

    Maybe 63-64?

    $25?

I keep on thinking au58. Maybe it's just the pic. Some of the highpoints appear dull like a little wear. Maybe it's just me.

gorgeous reverse, obverse a little weak with average to above average O mint strike and a few tics, I like it as a 64++ and think it's worth in the neighborhood of $40. Pretty coin image

On O mint dollars, you have to look at more than the hair above the ear and the eagle's breast. What you are describing are areas that did not strike up. On these, you have to take a close look at the eagle's neck and upper right (left as you are looking at it) wing. Notice the separation is very sharp between the feathers, absolutely no wear. This coin is a very solid 64.

I realize that the flat spots are strike related, I just was looking at some of the luster on some of the highpoints and it looked a bit dull.
Probably just the pic that's fooling me. That's why I qualified myself in my original post. would have to see it in person.

It's very difficult to capture full luster in an image. However, I can see enough in this image to be virtually certain this coin is mint state, with no circulation.
  • ms63 to ms64 and it is in the $30 to $35 range

63/64... Obverse seems to have numerous enough hits, that I'd give the Obv a 63, but the Rev is a lot better... maybe a 65... so I think overall it's a 64...

MS 64+ obverse with an MS66/67 reverse. Very nice coin. Dealers are paying $42-44 for any slabbed 64's.

I'd say 64 and the stuff by stars r2-3 worries me because that looks like a cleaned spot that might make it NG.

    MS64.

    Somewhere in the $40-$45 range.
    When in doubt, don't.
  • Thanks for all of the comments. I paid $30. I'll be sending it in for the quarterly freebie.....Ken

The raw price of a MS64 Morgan would be no where close to the price of a slabbed MS64 Morgan. $20- $27 for that coin raw.

So what's the strange colored area by stars r2-3 that nobody else commented on?

  • stars r2-3...Dog97, you'll have to explain what "stars r2-3" is, because I don't know....Ken

I'm not Dog, but he's talking about right side of obverse.... counting the stars from bottom right side. There appears to be a discolored area.

  • Thanks davewang202 and stman. I'll not be able to answer that without looking at the coin, and the coin is already packaged to go to PCGS....Ken

Lot's of hits on the cheeks, neck and fields. I'd be surprised if it came back higher than 63.
