Cards for Kids :: Update

Thanks to all of you that sent me over 7000 cards!!!
It has caused a lot of positive commotion at Anna P. Mote Elementary school...

The program...
any child in the school who wants (50) cards of their choice submits a (1) paragraph story/essay about a professional athlete...
Illustrations are welcomed... but not required...

Students such as my students who cannot so easily write an essay get a lot of help from an aide, myself or a regular education peer...

During recess... a group of 2 or more students and at least one of my students can thumb through the 7000 cards... hand picking the ones they want...

It's been cool because it creates a natural opportunity for my students to be with their regular education peers...

A lot of the students are pretty excited about it...
so far we have received essays on:
(3) on Jordan
(2) Mcgrady
Bender
Jason Terry
Ty Law
Derek Harper!!!
Barry Bonds
Derek Jeter
Pedro Martinez
.......................
ironically, none on the phillies/eagles/raven or O's...
so much for local support!
........................................

One boy has been a bit of a trouble maker all year...
This cards for kids program has inspired him to get his act together...
since we started this at our school... the number of hours he spends in the SAC room has been reduced by about 95%...

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Kids are now trading cards around the school...
I have seen some kids buy some supplies... top loaders/plastic pages etc...
I even traded a kid a DeWayne Wade rookie from my own collection for a 1994 finest david cone that he found in one of the boxes...

Some teachers have had to confiscate cards because kids are trying to trade during class...
isn't that awesome? lol

Some kids are buying packs at their local shops and bringing those cards in as well.

Thanks to everyone that sent cards...
They are promoting collecting/trading/literacy and BETTER BEAVIOR ....
and most of all...
They are providing an opportunity for students with severe/moderate disabilities to hang out with their regular education peers on a mutually inspiring activity...
I'll scan some of the kids work...
thanks,
Geoff

PS: try it in your school!
