Is There Really a Difference in a PF/MS69 and a PF/MS70 Modern Comemorative?

moosesrmoosesr Posts: 1,966 ✭✭✭
I have several modern commemoratives and some of the MS69's have no marks at all that I can see, while other's have a few extremely small marks. Anyone have any idea what criteria the PCGS graders use to determine the difference between the PF/MS69 and PF/MS70 coins? image I actually did get a PCGS MS70 grade on one of four gold modern commemoratives I submitted, but I couldn't tell the difference between it and the MS69's.

The stated criteria is no flaws visible under 5x. The real criteria is a chart on the grader's wall with the monthly quota numbers. If you submit late in the month, you're screwed.

I'm sure if you had one of each you would be able to tell. I can with my state quarters, but if I only had the 69 I would have never know the differance from a pr 70 and pr69.

There may be a difference in price, but to the human eye, it's a crapshoot in my opinion, on what grade you receive from the services.

Fire away, but I'll stick to my opinion. image

I have noticed MS/PF70's don't have any haze and 69's do. mike

I thought the only diffence was anywhere from a couple hundred bucks to into the thousands!

There is usually very little range in quality of the modern proofs from the best to the worst.
This range gets far smaller if you're looking at only about the best to about the worst.
For most people it takes some experience before they can see this difference on many
dates of the modern proofs. This leaves an extremely small difference on the very best
to nearly the very best. It is a real difference even if the grading services don't always
get it exactly right it is still a real difference. Those who can't see it should certainly not
be paying extra to get PR-70 grades. These are great coins and highly collectible but the
old adage is that one should buy the best coins he can understand. If these coins aren't
for an individual for any reason then another series or another grade would be recom-
    mended.

I'm sure Modern Proof are collectable and there are some nice designs but paying extra for grades above PR67 (or whatever grade it is that the prices skyrocket) is a waste of money. They are all pretty much the same....
