update - It's a 1815 quarter - not a counterfeit half dollar

Following is a link to (what I first thought to be) a counterfeit 1815 half dollar on ebay:

Counterfeit 1815 half dollar on ebay

Conder pointed out that it is a quarter, not a half dollar - so not a counterfeit.

I wonder if the eager bidders know what they are bidding on...

Why do the auctions involving fake or questionable coins always seem to have the bidders ID's kept secret.

I can't tell if it is a counterfeit or not, I can't determine the variety. I don't have my copy of the Browning QUARTER book on hand. Check out the rev picture. The first digit of the denomination is a 2 not a 5. This half dollar is a quarter. (And to think he says that it has been looked at by over 20 dealers. image )

  • Well Conder, looks like you are right! I was not thinking "outside the box" far enough!

I believe only one quarter variety in 1815.
