That does look like blood - how did you get that zane was bidding on this item?

Looks like someone liked the stain.
  • Knowing Zane, he would get it checked out by Dave Bushing before handing over the cash. No one would pay serious money for it without examining it first.

This is a very interesting (no) sale - the seller deals in electronics - I had a brain drain and Gemmy had looked at the bidding history - some $ people - I would guess they probably emailed this guy with their bidding requests with respect to the purchase - the guy who is not a dealer from what I can see musta done his homework to have set such a high reserve - expect to see it at Lelands, Mastronet etc. this summer.

  • If it's real it would be quite a find. The problem is that there are people that are very good at sewing the names into jersey's, using thread that has been artificially aged. If it makes it to Mastro's they will be able to tell. Wonder why there weren't any scans of the front of the jersey, did I miss something there?

    Rick,

Great point. I was wondering why there was no scan of the front also. Maybe it was eaten by the moths. LOL

He's not showing the front of the jersey possibly because there's no logo on it... I say this becomes he claims it was handed down to the minors... perhaps to a team that removed the NY and put some other patch on it... Newark? Anyone out there able to shed light on this?

Upper Deck will buy this by Memorial Day... it'll end up in the next 10 year's worth of UD Yankee Legends or some such crap... IMHO.

That's an express possibility. With respect to the serious collectors - this is just a guess but even if it were altered within the baseball system, it would still have tremendous collector appeal - now if the front had turned to sh$t and the hogs ate it - that's another story - again - not as valuable - but it could be displayed in a case from the back - just talkin here - this thing if intact and OK will go for what I paid for my house!

The description states that the jersey was sent to Joplin which is where the Yankees had a minor league team. The front logo would have definitely been changed. A jersey of this magnitude would not lose any value, one would simply have the front logo professionally restored. In fact, due the the practices of the time it would be odd to find this jersey in tact. I'm sure that much homework was done by the bidders and there were many conversations with the seller. IN truth, this would not be that hard to prove. The records would be readily available and it would simply amount to lining up the story to see if it was true. I've been lucky enough to be around when a very large collection was being sold to a dealer friend of mine. There were jerseys from Dimaggio, Mantle, Williams, etc. I will never own anything like it, but being prestn to hold and look them over was amazing.

Great story and yes being around it is worth the price of admission - when I went to the National in Atlanta in 92, I had only collected for a few years and was totally overwhelmed by the uniform dealers as well as the big vintage dealers. It's quite impressing until you do a little reading of course nothing like hands on experience. That's why I have learned to be careful who I buy stuff from.

  • Does anyone here deal with Zane bats? I find his auctions odd, in that almost every single so called "game used" bat, has VERY little wear on it, and he seems to buy a lot of UNUSED game bats from others and it just makes me wonder. How does he get a hold of all these bats that have only hit a few balls?

Good question and I'm just learning about this and will hopefully have more answers in the future - bats with very little use piss off buyers. But I will tell you, he is a very reputable SCD vendor for years and is well known and honest. Also Bushing, Taube etc. I wonder about little use bats too. Now, I have purchased two bats thru ASI who get them directly from the players and they authenticate them with hologram etc. When you are in the ocean you swim with the sharks!

Zane Burns is considered a game used bat expert and has been a very reputable dealer for quite a long time. I've bought bats from him and have always been happy with them. The issue of use is one that we all deal with. Some want a ton of use, some just want signs of use. Some want cracked some will not buy cracked bats. Bats with little use can be explained in many ways. One is that these bats could have never been used and simply were prepared for use but never gotten to. You often see bats that have paint marks, this would have come from the bat rack, but few ball marks. A bat can get cracked with little use, that happens. Another thing that is not always thought about is that some players actually used to clean their bats. Pete Rose and Joe Morgan used to each clean their bats with rubbing alcohol after each game so that they could compare ball marks the next day. A factor as to how a dealer could get a large number of bats is where he gets his stuff. If a dealer buys from the team, from a batboy or even from a player he is going to get used, unused, bat rack and the whole shooting match. One thing that is important is to learn player models, bat manufacturer markings, etc. Like everything else, read and learn as much as you can and talk to people that know their stuff.

  • While I'm no expert, I know a fair bit about bats. I understand some dealers will have bats that have little use, but I've been interested in about a dozen of Zanes bats the last few months, and every one was little use, like right from the rack, even bats from the 70's and such. I don't know him, or much of him so I can't judge. I'm just don't personally feel safe buying bats from a guy who from I've seen has 90% VERY little use bats, and no bats that show any real use. If you deal in bats and sell tons of bats, you have to figure some would have use. It also makes me nervous about him buying game bats that other dealers advertise as unused and therefore go a lot cheaper. I'll take an old dirty worn out bat any day. Although, if I collected newer bats, I'd have no problem buying a little use bat from someone like ASI. To each his own I guess.

I understand your train of thought. One thing about Zane's ebay bats is that ebay is not his main source of business, in fact, the way I see it is that ebay is where he moves less desireable bats. This is why there are a lot of "little use" and "bat rack" bats. For premium use and quality bats he sells through his mail order business and I would assume consigns to the major auction houses. Look at the enormous difference in price between ebay and Lelands, Mastro or Grey Flannel. A few years ago I bought a Joe Morgan 77-79 bat off of ebay for $400. I used it in a trade for a bat I needed more. The Morgan I traded was in the next Grey Flannel auction and brought a whopping $1200! If you check the final results from these auctions you will see that many of their bats bring 2x-5x what the same bats bring on ebay. Ridiculous and amazing! I don't collect modern or current game used bats so I dont know much about them. I have bought vintage stuff from ASI and I do understand their agreements with players and they seem to be reputable.
