Help with Lefty Grove

I’m looking for some help with which Lefty Grove card is the most widely sought after and nicest looking. I don’t have any knowledge of cards in the ‘30’s but I want to buy one for my father for his birthday. My dad lived in the same hometown as Lefty and even worked for him at his bowling alley after Lefty retired from baseball. My dad has a lot of really cool stories about him and I thought he would appreciate a nice PSA graded card to remind him of simpler times.

Thanks

Ken

  • Not sure if it's the most widely sought after, but one of the toughest ones to find (I'm still looking!) is a 1935 Diamond Stars #1 Lefty Grove. Not only do they not show up often (I've seen 1 PSA 2 and 1 PSA 5 show up in the past few months) but since it's the #1 card, it's very condition sensitive.

Not to mention the fact that in any PSA holder, it'll go for way above SMR.
  • PS. 1934 Goudey is another nice looking card of Grove's.

If you don't have much time, more modern cards are available that depict Lefty (or if you get desperate, there are always nice reprints that display just as nice - and you don't have to worry about the value)

    Example of a nice reprint
  • Thanks,

the reprint Idea might be the way to go. I have a couple of months, but it looks like a tough card. Can't argue with a .25 cent card!!

    Grove PSA 5

    SMR: $475

Was going to bid on this card, but at the time of the auction there was a thread questioning this seller. Wouldn't have come close to winning anyway.

Currently collecting.....your guess is as good as mine.
  • Hey Playball,

Do you happen to know where the thread is? I actually bid on that card but was way under the final price!
  • Hi Sideplate,

You could check out the 1960 or 1961 Fleer all-time greats sets. Lefty was in both of those, I think he looks better in the '61 but both are attractive cards and way more affordable than the 30s stuff. There are some of each on eBay right now. Good Luck.

    Onegaucho,

    Slabbed

It could be nothing, but it was enough to keep me away.

    Sideplate,

This type of card is the reason for going to card shows. I doubt any dealer (except maybe 707sportscards) would have this type of price tag on this card in collector's grade. Most likely a premium, but not 2X+ SMR.

Edited to add: BTW, thanks for Kearse.image

  • Thanks for the advice. You can have Kearse. He stays hurt 90% of the time. But when he's healthy, he's a FREAK!!!
  • I'm a lurking Titan's season ticket holder...

90% is just a bit of an exaggeration, but I didn't flinch when he signed with the Eagles. However, I could have cried today when I heard my favorite player Justin McCareins was traded to the Jets.
  • bcd33,

I had not heard about the McCareins trade. What did we get for him? I can't believe they let him go!
  • 2nd round pick (42 overall)

I don't understand it, but I'm not the general manager of an NFL team either...
