Does anyone Mac bassed have trouble with set reg.

Is there anyone else out there who is using a mac? I had some trouble with adding cards to the set registry. I found one Mac in the office with an oldercopy of Netscape (I think 4.7) It is the only one that works. I am running 9.2.? so I might have to switch to 10. Anyone have the same problems, or was able to fix it?

Thanks

I am using a Mac running OS 10.3 Panther with Safari 1.3... no problems! Works great... When I was on OS 9.2.2 with Netscape 6 everything was ok then... sorry I didn't have any trouble I had to fix... then I might be able to help you!

I can suggest throwing away your Netscpe prefs in the preferences folder in your system folder... some new settings and you may be fine!

Best of luck, vulcan! Oh, and welcome to the board!

Awful> Install Netscape 6.2x and you should be OK. Internet Explorer probably won't do it for you. About 2 years ago, I went round and round with CU's web team. They seemed overly inclined to point the finger at MS and ignore the fact that other Mac-based browsers didn't work and that the registry was the only forms-based page that I had problems with. Anyway.

That said, it's time to stop being an ostrich with your head buried in the sand. Mac OSX has been out for over three years now and has been truly outstanding since version 10.1 with consistent improvements. OS 9.x is DEAD!!!!! Apple hasn't put out an OS9-related update in a long time. Software developers as a group are requiring 10.2 or later on almost all new software. Don't get me wrong, your stuff won't stop working - but you're generally done as far as new software goes.

I've been down the same road on the coin side of things. I switched to using Netscape and everything now works like a charm.
    When in doubt, don't.

Another note. . .if you're running OS 9.x I'd suggest holding off on Netscape 7.1. It's OK I suppose, but it wants something like 38MB of RAM allocated to it - which is totally ridiculous for a web browser under OS9.

I'll echo Mike's take on things- he helped me thru the same problem. Safari works great on the registry, IE won't at all. CU's answer was to buy a PC, which was about as viable to me as gouging both of my eyes out.
The only advantage I've seen to OS 9 is if you bill your clients by the hour you'll make more due to constant restarts (especially if you use Quark). I've only crashed twice with OS X, and that was at the very beginning. Once you get over the first week or two of getting used to it you will be sorry you took so long to switch from 9.

Griffins> I will say this, while OSX is infinitely more stable than OS9 ever dreamed of being when you do have problems with OSX they tend to be more complex and tougher to fix. The number of directories in OSX increased at least 25-fold. And user permissions were a non-issue in OS9. Even so, I have much fewer problems with OSX than with OS9.

About 85% of OSX will be familiar to people who paid any sort of attention to things under OS 8.x or 9.x. There are some differences, but it's very rare that I come across a user who just doesn't get it. I also disagree with Apple's minimum requirements for OSX (10.2.x and later). In my experience, this is the minimum you should have from a practical standpoint -

    * A machine that came with at least a 500MHz G3 processor or faster out of the box. Processor upgrades are all well and good, but they don't speed up your memory busses, add firewire ports or give you a CD-RW. And they almost always cost more than the whatever performance increase they give you is really worth.
    * A bare minimum of 256MB RAM. And even then, 256MB is barely adequate. As cheap as memory is, there's really no reason to run less than 512MB.
    * A CD-RW or ComboDrive. If you think you're gonna back stuff up on Zip or floppies, you're fooling yourself. Internal is preferred. If you go external, make sure you go with a firewire drive. If your machine doesn't have built-in USB2, then stay away from USB2 burners! If your machine doesn't have built-in USB2, then it drops down to USB 1.1 - which means your burn speeds top out at 4x.
    * The willingness/ability to upgrade your key software to OSX-native versions. Some things run great in Classic mode and some things don't like it at all. The more you run natively in OSX, the happier you will be!

So. . .if you have anything that is beige in color. . .any of the Blue & White G3s. . .or an iMac that came with a processor slower than 500MHz my suggestion to you is to not put any more money into the machine you have - and save that money toward a new machine (which will come with OSX pre-installed anyway). Keep in mind, the new eMacs start at $795 and are still easily under $1k nicely configured. Does it really make sense to spend $129.95 for Panther on an old machine at that point? I certainly don't think so.

For what it's worth, this is my hardware. . .
    Desktop - G4 (Mirror Doors) - 1.25GHz. . .1GB RAM. . .two internal 80GB drives. . .ComboDrive + another internal 52x CD-RW. . .running 10.3.2 - connected to NEC 17" LCD monitor
    Laptop - PowerBook G4 15" (Aluminum) - 1GHz. . .1GB. . .60GB. . .ComboDrive. . .external 60GB pocket firewire drive. . .running 10.3.2

BTW. . .if you're having problems with Quark crashing/quitting, there may be other issues but the first thing I'd look at is fonts. Under OS9.x ATM Deluxe will identify damaged fonts. . .under OSX, use Font Doctor 6 for this. image
