1981 Topps Johnny Bench PSA 9 drops to $12 in new SMR

I am no expert on the 1981 Topps set, but is this more indication of how well the analysts of SMR really study the market? Isn't this one of those cards people always talk about as super tough? Looking for some of you 1981 Topps guys to chime in...
I am buying and trading for RC's of Wilt Chamberlain, George Mikan, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, and Bob Cousy!

I heard rumours that a PSA 9 went for quite some serious coin! (e.g. adding a zero is not enough...)
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

That's correct. I believe PSA 9's were going for $175-$200 at one point, and there weren't many to go around.

    Rob-

I sure that have some pretty good records regarding realized 1980 Topps PSA sales. You should email them to Joe O. Considering your knowledge of the set...I'm pretty sure he will look at your numbers in depth.

John,a couple months back at the start in breaking up the set I did offer the information to Joe.It was noted to him that I understood it's not a set with dire emergency to revamp in the smr, though he might be interested in my forwarding the numbers as they were really surprising.I was tracking prices from my set sales, besides others too.I got no reply to two emails sent to two different addresses two weeks apart.

It's understandable 1980 Topps are what they are unlike say 72s, 75s, or 71 GM therefore,I take it he has zero interest,or has much bigger fish to fry. However, once the set is 100% gone I plan to sort out my notes regardless of wether they'll help anyone besides myself.

    Greg,

Yeah pretty funny stuff considering. This is the prices realized for the 4 psa 9 benches were-

    25.00 bin nov of 2002
    25.00 bin dec of 2002
    35.00 bin dec of 2002

I sold 2 of the 3 when I first started the one case provided 2 of them I thought they were easy boy was I wrong. Last year in I think aug I picked one up in a bgs holder that crossed. I sold it two weeks ago and the I had 5 offers above 200 lets just say that.

So now that the cats out lets see how many more come up. But its been no secret this card is that tough along with the lynn I would say for sure they rate the toughest stars. A third 9 just popped in the lynn. They lynn is a little easier for its usually clean but the centering tends to run in the 9010 range and it seems to be a single print? But thats a whole nother story.

For pricing, I've tried to give my knowledge a few times on both 81's and rare sosa issues both were taken in the realm of yeah we'll do it. Checked the smr the next month nothing.

What I'd like to do is revamp the point scale for the 81's if the guys wouldn't mind. I find that to be a little off I'm sure who did it in the first place was just trying to help but I feel I could give a true competitive value weight of the set. At least imo.

I agree that the 80 & 81 sets need a bit of revision

Excluding the Henderson RC - Other than Pete Rose - Andre Dawson is the only non HOFER that is tracked in the SMR and his is one of mid popularity in the set.Molitor - is tracked but he was a shoe in too.

Then you have Niekro,Sutton,Jenkins,Stargell to name a few that are not tracked and I don't even think they have more than a weight of 1 in the set either.

There are a ton of popular cards scattered throughout the set like Trammell for example who deserves at least a 1.50 for weight.

Next issue is difficulty which I agree has yet to be determined but the set weight is worth a revision and I'm willing to offer any information if approached that will help.

What was the final outcome of your 1981 Bench?

    Rob:

I would agree with you that the weighting for the 1980 set is a little odd. In my opinion, there are far too many cards that should be weighted that are not currently.

I would encourage you to put your thoughts down. At that point, we can compare notes. Then we can send off our combined recommendations to Joe or BJ to have the weighting changed. Although you are certainly the "King" of the 1980 set, I think the more buy in by registry members would certainly add odds of having the set weighting revised.

Frank,I don't think a revamp of weight would hurt at all.To a degree almost nobody pays attention to it anyway on the 80 set.If anything it would give the active players a little more value towards their cards in a roundabout sort of way. Some of the already weighted cards sell for less than some commons anyway.
Probably due to the fact of a fair amount of population.

Also,I would be glad to combine notes with you for whatever it's worth.
