My 1965 Topps #22 Charlie Smith is Back

Some of you will recall a couple weeks ago that I mentioned a really nice 1965 Topps #22 Charlie Smith that I found at the Houston Tri-Star show in January. I sent it in and it got a 7. I then decided to send it back in to PSA for "Review' to see if maybe it could be bumped up to an 8. Well, it came back today. Unfortunately they decided to leave it a 7. Oh well -- it still was worth it. As somebody said, its one of the finest 7's they'd ever seen, and I'd agree. I'll probably be putting it up on eBay in the next few days so stay tuned. Here's the scan of it again, in case you forgot what it looked like.

  • FYI -- It is now up for auction on eBay.

  • Yep, that is one nice 7. Centering does appear to preclude an 8, but that card is a winner. Look at the crisp focus.

Buy the card... and this one is solid.

I'd still bet it finds its way back to the grading room in the future. You should do well at auction.

  • FYI -- The only sticker the head grader put on the holder was "T/B Centering." The corners are all 8/9 quality --as toppsgun said, the focus is exceptional -- and the surface is flawless. I was absolutely stunned when I plucked this thing out of a pile of 65's at the show. I hope somebody gives it a nice home in a high quality 65 set.

I've submitted a lot of 1967's like that.
Regardless of corner sharpness, if it is OC both ways (and it is) it won't get an 8.

Except that just as soon as I write that, I look at this Palmer 8 that is not great
centering either way and it is an 8 NQ. I guess I got someone on a good day.

We sports cards collectors, like the athletes themselves, have to hope the good
calls balance out the bad calls by those we entrust...

1967and 1973 Topps baseball wantlists (any condition) welcome. Once had the #14 ATF 1967 set. Yet another collector like skylaneflyer, gimel1 who made it to the completion of 1967 only to need the money more than the company of 609 close friends.
Looking for oddball Norm Cash and Cleon Jones stuff, and 1956 team cards
  • I think the real reason the Smith got the 7 is the slight diamond cut/tilt. I don't know, cards with those types of cut are a no-no for me, but that's just a personal preference I suppose. I do not know all of the specifics behind this card or it's toughness, but it does have a very strong focus and the green is a very cool vibrant color.

  • Scott - Did you say the head grader put a sticker on your card? Is that common? Ive never had that on any of my submitted cards.

I sent the card back in for "Review" after contacting PSA Customer Service. They told me that when a card comes in for review, it goes directly to the head grader who does the review. A review costs the same as a regular submission ($10). The head grader will put as many stickers on the slab as needed -- pointing out the features that caused the grade it received, if the head grader feels the grade was accurate. This one got only one sticker -- saying "T/B Centering." If the head grader feels the grade was inaccurate, PSA will re-slab the card with the new grade.

They don't put stickers on regular submissions, just on reviews.

Was it worth the $10 investment? I believe it was on this card. Would PSA ever change a grade and re-slab based on "Review?" I don't know and I guess I won't until I send in one that gets changed. This was the first one I ever tried it on. Would it have been better to crack the card out and re-submit? Possibly, and a good many folks here have suggested that whoever wins the auction on this will do exactly that.
