The first four Georgies on a single medal!

This was a medal struck to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the accession of the house of Hanover to the British throne. On the obverse you see the first three Georges and in the oval held by the figure of Peace is the bust of the Prince Regent, George IV. It was made in the interregnum period of 1814 before the foolishness of the Bourbons and Napoleon's ambition made the Hundred Days necessary.

I'll post a detail of the middle swath of the reverse and its great details, including a lion, a boat and a sun with a face! image

The medal itself is fairly rare.

I've got to agree with you there spoon! What caught my eye was the reverse:

In addition to everything else I mentioned there's an Irish harp and a cornucopia strewn around. You've got to hope that girl isn't too heavy for that lion; could be an idealised moment just before a feline lunch! image

The sad thing about the obverse is that those guys really thought they were good looking. I guess it really is good to be king... image

  • Great piece, Vern! And even has a ship on it! I definetely like that medal! As for lion- it really looks a litlle bit unhappy image

I suppose that the ship is "Golden Hind" of Sir F. Drake, but I'm not sure about it.

Absolutely stunning piece. Is it Silver or a white metal?

I should have said; this is the white metal variety. It was also struck in copper and silver and British Historical Medals says all three varieties are rare. This was the first one I'd seen in over 20 years and it was from a guy in Australia.

    Very nice medal....who's the engraver/designer?
  • Mr. Elverno, I agree that the reverse is quite beautiful. I also agree with those who feel the obverse is obscured by the ugliness of the kings. Thanks for showing us this rare medal.

Mr. Shipcoin, I'm very impressed by your knowledge of the details surrounding the ships on various medals and coins. image
  • Very neat and unique, I like it image
