What are some of your best sales on cards that are now worthless(or less worthy)?

My Favorite........We had a store in the mid-late 80's. I remember selling 1985 donruss Eric Davis Rookies for $27-$35 apiece. This Spanish fella used to come in all the time buying them up. Since he was a good customer I would give them to him at the bargain price of $25! Even though that card is worth about ten cents now, everytime I come across one I stilll look at it far differently than any other ten cent card.

I had two 1985 star Michael Jordan rookies(authentic). I kept one, and I sold on in 1998 for $1900 to this same Spanish fella. Soon after, the prices on the Jordans just drops like a lead weight to their current market of about $500. That Jordan paid for the fence in my backyard.

in 1995 I sold a 1985 star Co. 76ers unopened bag to a lawyer for $850 dollars. This was my brothers bag, and I still remind him of that sale all the time, since that same bag is worth about $75.

Almost 4 years ago, I hit the holy grail of modern sportscards (at the time)... I managed to get 5 copies of the 96 SI Kids magazine with Tiger Woods in it (how I got them is another story altogether!)... anyway, I cut them out and sent them all to PSA for overnight grading and got 8s on all of them.. I was pleasewd and started listing them one by one on eBay immediately... the first one went for $3800, the second for $3550. the third for $3500, and the fourth for $2600!!! My wife suggested hanfing onto one "just in case"... well 6 months later the writing was on the wall so I listed it and got $560... I was amazed! It was like hitting the lottery! We used the money as the downpayment for the addition on our house!

This will never happen to me again! The real beauty is much better! Now, when I want to buy a pricey card, I just remind my wife how far "ahead" I am in the dollars I've made versus what I've spent!

  • Use to buy 1990 Score unopened sets for about $7-$10 a pop and then grade the Brodeur, Lindros, and Jagr cards. Sold a Jagr PSA 10 for $362. Brodeur PSA 9's were going for $50+ at the time.
Neigbhor picked up a Can Anson "A ballplayers career book" at a flea market about 20 years for about $5. We just sold it on Ebay for $375.

    Tiger Woods Masters Collection.

I bought about 30 sets in the winter of 2000 before they hit the $50 mark and then later 300. I was selling them for 200-600 in PSA 7 form. They were actually tough cards to grade - I received two PSA 8's. These cards were a MONSTER HIT as Tiger won three majors that summer. At a show in March 2001, I traded 3 PSA 7's for the 33 Yellow Ruth PSA 3 and two for a 33 Gehrig PSA 4. image

    P_A,

What is your icon? To me it looks like a hi-tech bong. Jagr PSA 10 for 14 bucks... guess I won't bother cracking my factory set. Missed the boat on that one!

This is also a 'both sides of the fence' issue too. It's great to make buck, but when you're on the other side of it, it doesn't feel so good. I'll list a some examples of both: what I made out really well on and what I 'boneheaded' on.

    The good:
    1) traded 87D and 87TT will clark rookies for an autographed 1984 Olympic team bat authorized by the long ago defunct Thyberg Sports Marketing.
    2) 87F Bo Jacksons
    3) All Will Clarks rookies.
    4) Barry Bonds 87F, 87D, 86TT, 86DR - never paid more than $1 ea. and had at one time over 200 total, majority were fleer.
    5) Bobby Bonilla (same as above) except 375 total.
    6) 86D factory sets: bought 30 at $45 ea. and sold most right after Canseco 40-40: low $90 - high $119

    The bad:
    1) still have close to 300 Bonilla 86DR; now worthless.
    2) 2 - BGS 9 Tiger Woods GSV rookies - paid about $700 for both; right before the infamous British Open round three, '81'.

  • i sold a 2001 Donruss Classics Classic Combos Babe Ruth/Lou Gehrig Bat/Jersey #4/50 (Gehrig's jersey number) for $2000 after pulling it from a $10 pack. its still valued pretty high now, but the proliferation of newer memorabilia cards would make it impossible to sell now for anywhere near 2 grand

  • Pulled a 99 SP Top Prospect Michael Jordan autographed card hand numbered 10/10 (baseball product of him with Birmingham Barons). Pack was $4.50. Sold it for $15,000. Now, that card would bring about 1/3 to 1/4 that.

Wow. Nothing all that great. Sold an Erick ALmonte 01 Bowman Chrome gold refractor for a little over $100 when Jeter went down last year. Should be worth about $10 right now.

The stuff I tend to sell winds up going UP in value...

Great story! Aren't those thing selling for $50 or so now on ebay? Congratulations on having the foresight to sell them.
