Hello 1jester

I just wanted to thank you for the invite. I've been busy most of the day. But I did get a chance to do a little poking around last night over here. Well I just wanted you to know your invite was not ignored. By the way only have two coins that would fall under world. One being a coin from the Bahamas With Elizabeth II and the other a 1 PFENNIG German. Will I be band from the board for saying I have one of those. I hope not. But thats the end of my world collection as far as coins.

  • You answered me fast while I was editing my post. Thanks again. So what is the darkside all about. Had me kinda nerves posting after I read a thread About the lightside turning there back on people who come over to the darkside. I hope that doesn't mean just visitors.
  • And one other question can most of the world collectors read what is written on the foreign coins?

With a great attitude like you have, you already make an exemplary Darkside citizen....image

I can't vouch for the attitudes of most who post on the Lightside, but we try to be friendly, cordial and outgoing here.

As for being able to decipher writing on foreign coins, well, it's a never-ending challenge. For example, I know absolutely nothing about oriental coins, and can't tell even what country they are from sometimes. The same goes for Arabic coins. My experience is very limited. On the other hand, if you have any questions, just post them here and some really knowledgeable and experienced people will usually be able to ID something within hours or even minutes. We have specialists in all types of coins here. It's really something!

One thing that can help you is to find some good research materials, and the so-called "Bible" of the Darkside is the series of volumes produced by Krause, called Standard Catalog of World Coins, or something like that. Each one is like a huge telephone book, and now I believe they have one volume for each of the past 5 centuries.

But don't be afraid to post your questions.

Could you give us more info on the coins you mentioned? For example, what size and color and dates? The German 1 pfennig piece is very small, being like our cent, but without a date and mintmark it would be hard to tell its value. Same for the Bahama coin.

  • I'm sure they have no real value. There just parts of my other interests to added to. Like I like collecting War Memorabila. Civil war, Korean, German, and Vietnam. Plus chinese paintings when I can afford it which is far between. The coin from the Bahamas is the commonwealth coin.

The German coin is a little smaller then a penny made of zinc I believe and is minted 1941. I like war photos, Picked up some death cards from the Vietnam War. Plus some great photos. I’ll see if I can share the photos. The photos are orginal 8X10, but the best I could do was take a photo of the photo with a digital camera since I do not have a good scanner.

If it is a romance based language, I can usually get the gist of it. image I can also read some Greek, which helps. But when in doubt, it's time to post pics here and ask around!

  • oldshep thanks for saying hello to me as well. I will definitely be looking you up. I would love to see your photos. I think I inherited this war thing some how from my father. He served in Korea twice and was station in Japan for 13 or more years. He joined the military when he was 15 or sixteen. And One day in Vietnam. Old soldiers believed there is a major war every so many years and Vietnam was just the time for another one and that’s when he decided it was time to retire. But my mother tells a funny story of him disappearing and when he came back he said he had been to Vietnam. He was escorting something on a plane over there, til this day he swears he doesn’t know what it was. And by the time he landed his papers had come through. But by the time I was born he was finish with the military. But I have some kind of bug for this stuff which is unusual for a woman.
