Invoice results - Phillies Galore!

Ok, so I got a little crazy with the $5 special, sending in a lot of "borderline" cards - but for $5, what the heck:

Invoice #4146132, Zip 94303

I was really shooting for 8s and 9s (knowing the Burger King cards are killer), so only 4 or 5 real "mistakes" were in the batch. But I could have gotten all 7s after seeing that Rose PSA 10 show up image. To make RobE proud, the first PSA 9 #6 Unser highlights is in there too ...

Robert

P.S. Nearly all the cards are for my personal collection, but doubles are up for sale/trade if there is any interest out there ...

    Robert,

    Wahooooo!!!!!!!!!!image

Sorry to see the 81's didn't pan out any better. On the flip you had some backingimage

Now for the question who's bull is better?

    Gator

Yes, I did, thank you very much image. I knew some of those '81s are tough ones, esp. the Bull and Smith, but I've been itching to get to 100% one way or another.

I'll scan my Bull in when I get the cards and we'll see who's in nicer ... my guess is that both should really be 9s image

The smith is truely impossible you might catch one in a 9 holder someday. BUT that will be the day the grader gives the nod on the 65-35.

    Congrats Rob!

Rob,emailed me to tell of the great news in popping the first of a 9 on the same card that was in my hand ready to be scanned which is one of the few PSA 8s.

    Concidence?

There are too many Rob's on this thread.image For a second I thought you were talking to me.I was just ready to explain that my 80 Rose HLTS has been gone for quite some time.image

The Burger King portion of your invoice is amazing,Robert!

BTW- I just listed a bunch of Phillies where one might be an upgrade to your 716 Greg Gross.

Nice Job on the Unser too.I have never seen one straight 9 before. There are now 3 8s which I've had here along with a 9/OC that was better than both 8s so that must be some nice piece of cardbaord.

The Rookies card seems to be a problem in 9 too (just to find) but I have a nice 8 here (so it seems)

    Robert:

Where did you get your 1980 BK cards from? I have a few unopened boxes at home that I plan to crack in the next few weeks -- wondering if yours came from vending, though -- since the corners on the packs are often mangled (not to mention centering problems). Good job on the Rose 10!

I got your message on the Schmidt -- I would be interested in one of those 9s.

Also -- I have a whole bunch of 1980 Topps in at PSA -- and I'm looking to have a fairly robust team set before Summer - with a strong showing across the board.

    Congratulations!

Very curious to me that it is has been easier for me to track down 1981 PSA 10s than 1980, given that 1981 seems to have so many freaking problems associated with it -- not sure if that is pretty much solely attributable to Gator's stewardship on the 1981 set -- but thanks for the kind words. Hopefully my submission will have some nice success.

You probably will do well,Marc.I don't know about 10s but much of what you shared appears within allowable guidelines that can be detected from scans.

<<<Very curious to me that it is has been easier for me to track down 1981 PSA 10s than 1980>>>

I think it probably has a lot to do with the lack of submissions for 80 over anything as the lucky few have opened the right boxes. It's only recent that a number of the more difficult 1980 cards have come up in 8s and 9s.Plus,more 10s have been coming up lately, but as someone else noted when I started the set the 10s seem to be graded more strict than some coming out now.I agree with that at about 50% since there have been some really nice 10s in the last 6 months that I've seen.

Thanks Marc - believe it or not, all these cards came from a few boxes I had purchased over the past 6 months or so. Many of the cards (as you mention) had dinged corners, and some packs actually were curled up so bad I didn't even bother opening the packs. That said, the middle card in most of the packs was in decent shape. But the real luck was hitting a string of 12-15 packs in one of the boxes that were just pristine, not too tightly wrapped and flat as a pancake. Heck, I think getting an 8 on that stupid checklist card was as big an accomplishment as some of the 9s on there. And a 10 on a BK card from either year? I guess I'm still in shock, and will remain so until the card is physically in my hands ...

Helionaut - sorry, the Bake BK is for my collection. I'd be happy to go through the raw Bakes I have at home and send you a few of the nicest ones if you like ...

Ed - ditto on the Rose 10 for now ... the '80 BK Rose is one of my all-time favorite cards, and I just couldn't imagine giving it up despite the big bucks it would likely bring (especially given how tough the BK issues are).

    Robert

Edited to clarify - the boxes were the 3-card pack boxes, not vending (I've never even seen one for sale) ...

    Robert:

You should get the 1980 BK set up on the Registry -- I'll happily join you in a friendly competition in putting that set together -- I love the BK issues - I also love the 1981 Coca-Cola issue, too.

As for vending - I've never seen it with the Phillies BK cards - but I have seen it with other 1970s BK cards. I have also, in the past, purchased at least one or two vending boxes of 1981 Drakes -- that's where I got a few high grade Phillies a while ago (although 1981 Drakes might be the ugliest set ever).

Congratulations! Agreed on the checklist being superhard. As soon as I started busting open some boxes, I realized that that would be one of the toughest ones to find even in 8. Given the curl, pack end, and the freaking centering (aren't those stars annoying!), I figured it would be a lot of fun finding that one.

BTW - curious as to how exactly you open the 3-card pack. I've experimented with a few different ways -- you don't want to pull on it and damage the corners any more -- if the checklist card is pretty ugly looking, sometimes I just cut through it with a blade to open the pack with the least impact.

    Marc,

My explanation would be as follows. I've searched through so many 81's that you could add everyone elses 80's and 81's together and I'd still have them topped. On the side you just cant go out and find 20 80 rack cases let alone 1 not to mention you have to pay a pretty penny for one because of the hendy. With the profit margin so wishy washy and the fact you have to hassle to get them graded. Not that many folks are on the hunt to crack 80 unless they have it in inventory from way back or are working on the set. I'm not even sure if I'd do it with all my team set collectors and so on. The only thing that would appeal to me is building another razor raw set and continue the quest on the yanks thanks to Rob. I'm not that far advanced in the 80's but they have alot more going for them than 81 especially the phillies. 81's seem to be horrible in the phils.

Has anyone seen a 80 vending sell I'd like to see the figures on that. I'm sure all you 80 phils are laying in fritchs warehouse.

All information is: IMO nothing here is factual for things seem to change everyday in newport beach.:confused

Sounds good Marc! You know, I initially debated sending in a complete set for grading, but once I decided to do it, I figured I might as well request the set be added to the registry once the invoice was done (if for no other reason to incent people to buy my extras image). Both BK sets really are key teams sets for Phils collectors (the '79 especially so for Rose collectors), and I suspect the passion many of us have for those sets stems from collecting them as kids. I'd love to eventually have all 3 sets ('79 BK, '80 BK, and '81 Coke) up and running on the registry, but I guess you have to start somewhere. I've got a decent raw '81 Coke set that I held off on submitting this time around so I can upgrade it a bit first. And (as you well know) the '79 BK set is probably the toughest of the 3. I've gone through a slew of those, and only the 3 cards on this invoice (Schmidt, Rose, Tug - all 8s) were submission-worthy. That set could be a real challenge ...

In terms of opening the packs, I realized pretty quickly (after practicing on a few of the uglier warped packs) that just opening them by hand carefully wasn't cutting it. So, I ended up using a razor blade to cut through the loosest of the 4 sides of the pack once the flaps were undone (usually the top worked best), then slid out the cards all at once (rather than one at a time). I was really mostly focused on the middle card, but for that one run of flat packs, the 3rd card was usually in great shape too. Hopefully you'll have similar luck (or better) with your boxes!

  • For GATOR5:

A comparison of the Luzinskis ...

From looking at them first-hand, the 9 is definitely the stronger card of the two (centering is a touch better, and there's a tiny print dot on the 8 to the left of "Topps" along the green border that is missing from the 9). That said, the 8 really is a 9 in an 8 holder ...
