Wow! Great deal! For any of us to be the winner, we would have had to beat the 6 or 7 minutes that the winning bidder won the lot from when it was listed...jay
  • Grady,

I had spent the week prior to that checking for updates every 5 minutes because my wife was out of town and I had nothing better to do. When that was listed, I was at the airport picking her up. I figure that was God's way of paying me back for screwing up The Bachelorette on TiVO for her. When I saw that the next day I felt sick.

  • Ouch...I'm sorry to hear that. There will be a next time I'm sure. I'm surprised we haven't seen it re-listed yet. We'll see....

Ha,ha poor four sharp. He dabbled in vintage and got burned on that. He might want to do a little more homework or stick to modern.

Don't tell Stump about that auction. He may get ill. I've been sick to my stomach on a few occassions like this one in the past. I don't know why someone would list under 'buy it now' if they didn't know the market value of an item.

Whoever bought it was searching for the seller's auctions because it wouldn't even show up in a regular search at the 7-minute mark. Nice score!

    JEB.
  • He must constantly trawl through the BIN's. On February 24, 2004, I listed a 1981 Brett PSA 10 with a BIN slightly over one that had sold the previous day, and the buyer bought and paid for it, I swear, before I was even finished loading it. Obviously, I give the buyer nothing but high marks.

    Thanks

    Randy,

Which brett did you keep the first or the second?

And yes this guy is a bin wizard!!!! He hits me up within an hour of listing. Personally I think he just likes to see the packages asap.

I had a difficult time deciding which one to let go. It was a coin toss. Finally, I chose to keep the first, because the colors were slightly more vivid. Both are beautiful cards.

    Which did you like better?

    Randy

    Edited to correct a typo.

    Randy,

You da man. The first was the best imo for the simple fact (if my memory serves correct) in the hat on the second you can see the slight fisheye which the first doesn't. Out of the four tens I've owned that is the only one without. I've emailed all sellers with the response yes it is there but it doesn't detract from the card which it doesn't. Just some of gators guru insight.

After the week I've had, it's good to know I got one thing right. In any event, the fish-eye really didn't detract much from the second card. I would have selected it in a heart-beat, but I liked the coloring (and part of that is the hat) on the second better. As I've said before, it's the card that I have that is most nearly perfect (if that is possible). And, while I have close to 70 George Brett 10s and at least that many 9s, and while a number of those may be worth more than the '81, it is the cornerstone of my Brett collection.

    Thanks again

Geez, that's tough. Even I would've snagged that. There's a lesson to be learned there, though. Back in my heavy RC investing days, I used to look through the auctions of various sellers that broke large amounts of wax because they had good quantities or rookies, and some often had BIN prices on them. You can search by seller immediately after listing, but it used to take 4-5 hours for them to appear in regular searches, so you could often snag stuff before most people saw it. Even though that time lag has closed considerably, for this auction to last 7 minutes, that's what someone must have done.

Is this the same guy who bought a '61 Rip Repulski for $35 in 8 a few weeks back? That BIN was hit in under an hour if I remember correctly. I wonder...

Since there are no other Carew 1969 PSA 8's in the closed auctions, I was wondering at what price this card should have closed?

I had my own rare stroke of luck the other day with this auction.

I've been looking for this card for about a year. A couple of months one was auctioned with a bad title and it sold for $257.

  • I'm curious too. I know this Brock is a tough issue and highly sought after.

Any clue as to the recent prices for this one?
  • There are no 9's of the Brock; there is one 9oc.

    An 8oc sold for $10 on 02/15

7's this year have sold for:
    $15.50 2/9/2004
    $102.50 2/15/2004
    $42.00 2/29/2004

I'm not sure if this information is helpful but it's all I've got.
  • I seem to remember a PSA 8 Brock going in the range of $600. My memory is fading quickly however.
Gaspipe, Stump or gemint might be able to shed some real light on this question. I have a very nice 7 that I bought off a dealer website for a steal (I thought) for $30. I then sold the really nice 6 I had for around that same amount.
The POP report shows a decent amount of 8's but I can say for sure that most of these are buried safely in the collections of 69'ers, HOF sets, Cardinal team collectors and Brock collectors. It is flat out brutal in 8.

  • The ironic part of all of this is that this particular seller usually starts his "Buy it nows" at 5 to 10 times the cards actually value. In fact, his minimum bids are usually two to three times the value. He will typically have to relist all of his cards at reduced rates in order to sell them.

I wonder if he didn't mean to put the BIN at $500 or even $5,000. I can't imagine it not being a mistake.

Yeah I'd be willing to bet that was intended to be $500.

He doesn't deal in cards that old, and I doubt he knew what he had. I'm guessing he priced it right, according to him. His profit is in volume. The fact that a dealer that sells as much as he does has never (knowingly) appeared on these boards should say something.
  • Check out some of his other auctions. He is definitely not bashful about overpricing.

Most of his auctions are for cards from the late 70's to early 90's. He does a lot of ebay business. Psa and ebay both must love this guy.

He does a lot of business and is very easy to deal with. He comes up with some very high end stuff for those of us who collect 70's and 80's football. I've been able to add a lot of stuff to my Cowboys collection through him and have had nothing but positive experiences.

Well our lucky '69 Brock PSA 8 winner didn't waste any time trying to "flip" the card (cert number 30685737).

Old Auction - $50 Buy It Now

New Auction - $59.99 Opening Bid

    Hurray for capitalism!

The brock in 69 seems to be one of those situations that created the word Hinke. There really is no known reason for why it is so tough. The centering always comes into play by why that is on this card as far as I know is unknown. I dont think it had a bad placement on the sheet. Any way it gos the 50 paid for this on a buy it now is a steal. The superior auction has one this time and the last I looked it was at 242.00. The last seven that sold on ebay rests in my set and I paid 42.00 for it. The seven before was a bidding war between me and the winner. If one of us was out it would have been a lot cheaper. The one on ebay now should sell for over 200 I believe the last 8 was maybe 350 or so. Well with two of them out there I hope to get one of them.. I am down to 3 cards that are 7's and the brock is one.

Stump -- There was once a really nice high end PSA 8 example that went for $585.03 last year. The seller had a large scan of it and it looked like a borderline 9 with really nice centering. I remember it well because I was the second or third highest bidder and wish now I would have bid at least another $150 for it since it was that nice. When I placed my snipe bid several days earlier I thought my bid was so far over the top that I never suspected anyone would outbid me. That's one drawback about sniping. There are no second chances.

    Dude

I remember that card now. I think I bid 300 on it thinking I would be in the ball park and got blown away. That was a nice card. Sooner or later a nine will pop. 5 more 0 pops went away on this weeks pop report 285,432 Gibson AS 476 one white one yellow 518 and somebody finnaly popped the 663 Radditz. Was that you Bob.

Dude is correct on the Brock sales history. Most sell in the $250 range but as more people learn how tough the card is, the price may go up, especially the high end 8s. I've probably seen ten of the Brock 8's at various times and I'd say 8 were low end 8s with the only solid to high end 8s being the one I purchased and the one that sold for $585. I paid $240 for mine back in 2000. I think Bob mentioned that the Brock is on the edge of the sheet (and maybe the corner). I think he has a series one uncut sheet. Incidentally, Bob is the lucky owner of the Radatz 9. He mentioned in another thread that the grading report incorrectly showed the card as 'Dennis Ribant'.
  • Dave (Stump),

The #518 (Fred Whitfield) that got a 9 was not a very strong example for the grade. It's got print dots in the blue circle and probably would have felt just as home in an 8 holder.
