Question for Baseball player Autograph collectors...

Do you prefer to collect autographed Baseball Cards
or Autographed BaseBalls?

and why?

I ask because I see all these GREAT posts
and personal websites discussing/showing
Wonderful collections of HOF and other Autographs
but it is almost all made up of CARDS....

I have many signed cards, but LOVE my signed Baseballs!

Basically, What do you prefer and why?

  • I'd say that I like baseballs more because they display a little better. In my case, I get all my baseballs autographed live at shows or in Cooperstown, so they have a little more intrinsic value to me. However, after seeing Raymond's site, I'm thinking of getting involved in autographed cards! I like the looks of the Topps Heritage autos a lot.

On a superstar, a baseball. On a run-of-the mill player (unless I'm putting together a team-signed ball), a baseball card. If possible, I try to get both from superstars.

  • I'd say autographed baseballs. I agree they do display well but I tend to worry about how they will look 5, 10 years down the line. Some of my older baseballs have started to yellow even though they are kept away from sunlight/heat.

    I like them both.
  • I prefer autographed baseballs. Just like the post above i get all of my memorabilia signed at shows or sporting events. A majorty of my memorabilia are from HOF'ers and other old time greats who i never saw play but i know of them and there place in history. I love to talk with them for the few minutes that i have and it's just great stuff. I have to say that Don Newcombe is the friendliest guy i have met in all the years of collecting autographs.

    I love meeting the ballplayers.

One of the best people I met was Ralph Terry who was so happy to meet everyone. He said to a bunch of thirtysomethings "Hi kids!"

I asked him about Roger Maris and we just sat there and listened to his praise for Roger saving him a lot of games backing him up in the outfield.

I used to have two nearly signed sets of cards: an 87 Topps set short 34 sigs and an 88 Topps set that was short about 200 out of 792. 15 years worth of work right there. I sold them both to take a stab at day trading. It didn't work.

That is amazing,Steve.15 years to meet an entire set of a run of cards.image

  • I like them both. I prefer baseballs, but they take a lot of room. Getting certifies autographed cards is a lot easier and less storage. But I also have a beautiful display case for my autographed balls. Puckett, Killebrew, Carew, Molitor, Oliva, Fingers, Jenkins, Feller, Winfield (can you see the Twins fan in me yet), Musial, Nolan Ryan, Branka, Bobby Thompson, Larson, Brooks Robinson all hang prodly on my rec room wall (I highly recomend HomePlateHeroes.com for there expensive but amazing ball cases).

But there is no way I could get my current collection on balls, and nowhere to store them...

Glad you like my collection though!
  • I prefer autographed baseballs. Quit collecting cards. Plus baseballs are better display pieces.

  • If it's an in-person signing of star, HOF or up and coming superstar/rookie, a baseball. Most of my trading cards are via mail through spring training or via team's stadium.
