Attn ACOWA - RE: SGC Experiment

gemintgemint Posts: 6,101 ✭✭✭✭✭
Not sure if you're still frequenting the boards but I wanted to provide an update regardless. You gave me the SGC84 1952 Topps Walt Dropo as the first experiment in the SGC to PSA crossover (thanks!). Well I finally got to a 50s submission and included this card (cracked out of the SGC holder). The results are in and it crossed to a PSA 8! I'm surprised it got an 8 due to the extreme diamond cut. Incidentally, this is the first card I've ever crossed from SGC where the grade was bumped higher.

Thanks again Alan.

Edited to include the year/make of the card.

Don't have the card back from PSA yet. The grades just posted. I'll scan and post it when it arrives.

Stump, did you win that 69 Rico Carty card in the 9 holder? I thought my $88 was plenty but it got spanked when I had to leave home with one hour left.

Proof? If gemint says it is so, it is so. Congrats!!! I wish I had a little of that luck.

  • Tom,

I was going to post the exact same thing.

Gemint is the last one you have to worry about making up something.

igloo , why would he make that up? lucky for him, I have not had any success with sgc crossovers going up. usually the same or loss of the 1/2 grade. some went down on centering

Gemint , ............ That is a fantastic upgrade ! Nice going ! On a side note , I was wondering how Alan's generosity in giving cards away with the promise that the person recieving the card submitted it to Psa for a crossover ! I know Alan gave away several or more cards with this stipulation ! Unless I missed a post somewhere , your's is the first that I have seen that was reported ! Do you think it would have crossed over to a 8 if you had left it in the SGC 84 HOLDER to be graded ? Again , congrats on the Dropo card....................Robby

Thanks for the kind words from everyone. Robby, frankly I'm surprised it received an 8 even after cracking it out. I would say the chances of the card receiving an 8 if I had left it in the SGC84 holder would have been even more remote.

Congratulations gemint! A whole grade bump on a '52 is sweet indeed. I seem to remember more than a few folks predicted that PSA wouldn't even holder the card. image

  • Congrats Gemint. I love the SGC product (as well as PSA). Both companies do a fine job. Although it's only one card this shouldn't be misconstrued as any trend, or that one company is better than another. It is what it is. I bump up on a great crossover.
Congrats again and kudos to Acowa for his generosity.

  • Alan is way too nice of a gentleman to ever bring this up, so I will:

SEND HIM SOME $CASH$ FOR YOUR GOOD FORTUNE or at least a small trinket acknowledging your appreciation.

I plan to but how do I get in touch with him? It seems he isn't posting anymore. Did he get banned or just frustrated with the direction the topics were going?

I have one Acowa story. At the 2002 National he GAVE me a '67 Cepeda PSA 8 - FREE! I only needed that card and about 5 others. At the time when the '67 registry was in it's infancy no one really knew how tough any of those cards were. So nearly two years later, that Cepeda turned out to be the toughest star card in the set and many collectors today need that card. Thanks again Alan! You are a class act!

    Another Alan story--

He insisted I stay at his plush hotel suite at the A.C. National last year--GRATIS! If I could only teach him to play Blackjack we could've bought more at the auction... image

With all these Alan stories it sounds like he's deceased. Tell him to get back on the boards...jay

Alas, poor ACOWA, I knew him well ...

My recent submission contained 4 SGC breakouts of 1960's cards :

    SGC 96 became PSA 8
    SGC 92 became PSA 8
    SGC 96 became PSA 8
    SGC 84 became PSA 8

Next time, me thinks I'll try PSA's crossover service ...
