Should PSA require profiles with names to post?

It seems to me that a lot of the garbage that goes on in these posts is promulgated by anonymous posters. Perhaps it would be better if anonymous posting was banned. what does anyone else think?

I'm all for it! I've operated under one simple principle: if you don't have the guts to identify yourself, your probably a little lacking in the honesty dept.

I agree as well. They should also do an email verification and possibly a SS check - maybe not that detailed but you know what I mean. I enjoy these boards as there is knowledge and humor to be had.

    totally agree Buck,

while its not perfect PSA could show the IP adress of the posters.

its probably easy to do and it should cut some of the BS

I like this idea! We should all put our names where our mouths are! It might discourage some of the negative -- or at least ignorant -- postings.

Even if it isn't done publicly, checking for shill, anonymous, or blatently trolling members needs to be done by the forum moderators. I'm sure that this site must somehow log IP addresses of all of it's posters. Over on the Beckett messageboards, every single time you post, your IP address is logged and noted as having been so by a link in the lower right hand corner of the post border. I've received some screenshots from Chris Borden (one of the Beckett Website Administrators) from those links; it shows the posters Beckett Membership ID, the IP that particular post came from, and all IP addresses that the ID has ever posted from! According to him, it's quite easy to cross-reference accounts with IPs to find shills, trolls, and the like. He showed me mine, so any Beckett Members who post here have nothing to fear (plus outside of ID#'s and IPs, there isn't any other really sensitive info stored there). I'm sure that PSA must have some sort of ability to do the same. The just need a good enough reason (Beckett's is that they are Coppa Compliant).

    Sean,

thats exactly what i was thinking of, it wont solve everything after all dial up has different IP numbers and many people have more than one computer, but it would make it harder.

asking for CC# or SS# might turn a lot of poeple off and new blood wont come in, making the forums rather elistist and stale

also , the moderator should try to be more involved

What calleocho is really saying is that he doesn't yet have his green card...much less a CC# or SS#. If I were in his position, I wouldn't want those as requirements either.

The trolls would just lie. They hide behind vague handles on the internet; what makes anyone think they won't just hide behind a fictitious registered name as well?

Personally, I have a hard enough time coming up with enough salient points for one ID, much less multiple ones.

if PSA wanted to cut down on trolls/etc, they should just ban IP addresses.

Make it a members only forum and get ID and credit card info. When inapproperate posts are made by XXX, PSA will charge a 'penality' at $50 a pop. Five penalities and you're gone. imageimageimageimageimageimage

PSA makes money and we lose the bozos. Effective? Yep. Feasible, implementable, and probable? Nope imageimageimage:

I agree with you. And your still da man who is King of the 61's!

I also want to add that we don't always have to see eye to eye to enjoy the boards and respect
each other. The other thread is actually giving me a headache and hopefully I can refrain

If you have to THINK TWICE about signing your name to it, most likely it should not be wriiten.
This is quite a DISFUNCTIONAL COMMUNITY as is the real world.
At least in the real world, if someone has an agenda against you, or just enjoys loading up and taking wild pot shots at you.....usually you know who it is.
I don't know however, maybe that is some of the charm or entertainment value "SICK AS IT IS" ...... to being on these boards.
You can be a "HOODED SOB HACK" and basically get away with just about anything, as long as you are not a repeatedly PSA antagonist.
My personal feeling is that you should have to sign your name to anything you write, if you put it out there.
It would make for a better, more responsible board........but some of the "entertainment value" would be sacrificed.
To many I suspect, that would be a more than acceptable trade off.
It certainly would garner MY VOTE!!

Win - that would be a very scary thought.

Seriously, I doubt that asking for names or IP addresses by itself would do much. Most trolls would just post under fake names.

I use AOL. It allows me 7 screen names/email addresses, and uses dynamic IP addresses (meaning that I'm not always signing in under the same IP address, and all the IP addresses simply trace back to AOL). I could very easily, if I wanted, create separate identities for each email address and post under each (with fictitious names on all 7). As long as the fictional names were not too recognizable (e.g., calling yourself Chuck U. Farley would be caught), no one will know.

I think this board does a good job of rapidly weeding out trolls as it stands.

  • I agree..It is way easier to deal with a few annoying posts then it is to supply a complete profile. When typically
you can make up anything you want so there is no real way to stop people.

People have AOL, IP Scrollers, IP SCANNERS and lots of other things to log on in random
ways without ever being traced. The trouble to go thru to stop a few probably wouldn't be worth it. The only way to prevent it
probably would be to charge people to join the forum....Or if you are a member of PSA Gold etc...you get a free membership to this
    forum.
