Grade the Peace Dollar

Saw this coin on ebay (no I don't own it). It was advertised as just BU with no grade attached. What do you all think it would grade? Obvious problems are some rim nicks on both sides, bag mark on the neck and a hit in the "R" of PLURIBUS.

  • I bet "hsturn" is selling it.........

ok... here goes..... It looks like the coin has been rubbed down.... it could be from the light but follow the eye down to the jaw... different color = AU......

Yeah good call on the seller, that's him. But come on I know I'm a newbie at Peace $'s but this coin does not look whizzed to me at all. I see no telltale lines that would imply whizzing or any metal buildup on the edges of the devices. You serious about it being whizzed? If so how can you tell?

Luster is goofy. It looks polished. There is an area of discoloration between the L and the eye on the obverse that looks like it has definite boundaries. If it is not polished, it is AU. Below is a blow-up of plenty of rub.

  • I knew it... I can call his coins a mile away... I checked his sell pages and couldn't find it.... I thought I was wrong (or someone who bought from him was selling it....) Look at the bottom of the neck... it doesn't have a crisp edge.... you can see a little hit there too right at the bottom... hit's on MS coins are very sharp... not dull and rounded on this one.... stay away...

I see you are buying some 21' from other posts... be VERY careful... a 21' is the hardest to grade and hardest to identify cleaned... I see you bought 2 raw ones.... you may want to at least stick to ANACS or another slaber.....

Geez, looks like I really have alot to learn about grading 21's!!! Do you guys teach classes? LOL Peaceman...yeah I picked up two low grade raw 21's recently...they have both been cleaned but I didn't really care, I just wanted to have a couple in my posession image High grades and respectable slabs are way out of my price range right now though. I've noticed that it is nearly impossible to find one that hasn't been cleaned...very frustrating. So I'm trying to find the ones with the least amount of cleaning damage apparent. When I do find one that I think hasn't been touched up looks like I'm still wrong LOL. Are there any printed resources for refining my 21 grading abilities?
  • This looks like the real deal..... ( I looked through about 45 cleaned ones on ebay......) even with the pics... it's ALWAYS a gamble raw....

Ok cool, I checked it out. So, what about it makes it look good?
  • Well... you'll never know until you get it in your hands... but from all of the one's I looked at on ebay (geez... there are soooooo many cleaned one's...) this, for me, would be the best "bet" It "looks" right because of the strike and the marks...
