Holed and plugged???

Look below the date at the un-natural look in the denticles........ No corresponding weirdness on the reverse, but what do you think? Holed and plugged?

It may have been repaired, but I don't think it's been holed.

It's definitely overgraded. There is no way that this coin could be VF-20 and have only have 3 or 4 letters of the "LIBERTY" showing. Allowances are made for the "B" because that is high up in the design takes unusual wear, but it's not a VF-20 with THIS much wear.

The also looks cleaned too. I'll bet that if this were an 1877-S or other common date that it would have been BB'd.

People go nuts over these CC Trade Dollars. At last week-end's Lakeland, FL show a dealer next to me bought 3 pieces in NCS (saved from body bag) holders for more money that I could believe ($3K +). All three coins had really been "worked over." He sold them before he got out of the building.

If it were holed and plugged the damage would be visible from the reverse as a hole goes all the way through the coin. I see no sign on the reverse. Also, I'd think PCGS would catch a hole plug but who knows. As for what the damage is I have no idea.

It may have had some repair work done there, or it may just be from a rim bump. I'd really want to see the coin in person, preferably out of the holder so I could examine the edge.

And I agree with Bill Jones, overgraded and most likely cleaned as well.

It could just be a rim ding.

No hole or repair.

Or a minor planchet clip. I have seen this on other Seated Dollars.

it appears to me that its just flash shine off the curvature of the holder.

i could be wrong ....but i doubt it!

It's on the coin and has nothing to do with the plastic.

There is also some weakness at 2:00 on the obv. rim and denticles.

There's no chance of that being a small cud that has worn down, is there?
