better certified than sorry

After doing my geometry homework, i decided to take a look at all my coins under my 10x loupe to see if there was maybe a diebreak or DD that i could have missed on one of my 213 coins in 2x2's. So after 30 minutes of searching every square milimeter of about 100 coins i came upon my morgan dollars. I have about 20 of these, but i have two that are just soo beautiful and completeley defy the rest. Beautiful toning, full strike and tons of luster. I thought to myself "I really should get these coins certified". Now i know all these are commmon as all hell and i don't think either of them would even make 60, but i just feel like having a coin certified preserves it and i feel as if it is safer to handle, if i should drop it. Most of it is just phycological. In your opinion, What determines if a coin is "valuable" enough to certify and what are some reasons why you might certify a coin?

I think that is one of the reasons NOT to certify--certify if you plan on selling a coin, or if it is of a truly significant value that certification is needed for insurance or just to keep track of it better.

If you want to make sure they don't get damaged, put them in an AirTite or CoinWorld holder (the ones that are like slabs)... they are much cheaper. Don't throw your money away slabbing for no reason.

My criteria is: do I get enjoyment, protection, or pleasure out of slabbing it. That is, I really don't worry whether the coin is "worth it" or not. I only worry about whether I want it in a slab or not. The only time I break that approach is if I buy a coin that I hope I can re-sell for lots of $$$. You know, the gamble on raw where I believe it to grade higher than I bought it at and want to certify it so that it's easier to sell.
  • slabbing also helps me improve my grading skills...i've gotten it down to 3 +/-..grading and determining AT are my two weaknesses

don't certifiy based on value, certify based on questionable authenticity or attribution.
