Yes, the Coin Gods were not smiling down on me overall, but they made up for it with the one BIG bone they threw me.
I picked my coins with great care, but struck out 3 out of five, sort of.
I sent in a nice MS 1926 $20 St. Gaudens. It is the only coin that I purchased between the ages of 11 and 49. I bought it in 1979 at Macys in N.Y. (That's right 1979! It's not funny, I paid 8 big ones)
I thought it was at least a 63, but NGC saw something that I did not-------Not Pleased-------AU58
I got two body bags for AT, one Morgan and one Peace. NGC states that they look for toning that is clearly artificial or not market acceptable. I can't tell you how many times I have seen the exact same toning on NGC and PCGS coins. Not happy at all!
I sent in a power house toned 1884 O Morgan that came in at 63 which is what I expected. Whew! I got one toned coin through.
And now, the bone. I was cruising Yahoo auctions one day just looking for toned stuff in general, when I came across a really nice looking 1881 IHC. I'm not really a fan, but this coin had a nice purple tone to it and looked awfully clean. The coin was listed by the seller as a nice Ms 63/64 coin worth about $85. Two bidders had been going at each other and after 8 bids were up to $61.00. The auction had a buy now of $66.00, which on Yahoo stays open for the entire auction, unlike the BIN on EBAY. After about 30 seconds I thought "Giddy-up" and it was mine.
When I got it I nearly jumped out of my skin. The purple toning wasn't as prominent as in the picture, but the coin was clearly more than a MS 63/64. In fact, beneath the toning came a glow that was clearly indicative of SOMETHING MORE!?!---------Well----PF 65 BN!!!!!!!!!!!!! With some beautiful purple toning.
Now that MADE MY DAY. And, if you eliminate my purchase from 25 years ago, I invested $181 recently on the other 4 coins and came out on the up side big time. Thanks Coin Gods for my bone. I sincerely appreciate it.

The Ludlow Brilliant Collection (1938-64)
It really sucks about the Morgan and Peace dollars. I've had a couple of Morgan's BBed, one for whizzing/cleaning and another for PVC. That's why I only buy those particular MS coins slabbed.
