71 Baylor/Baker PSA 9

I have been searching for this card for my PSA 9 RC Collection for years...finally snagged one!!! When was the last time you saw one of these black beauties in this grade???

If you appreciate rare cards as much as I do you will enjoy this, which is why I am posting the scan.

nice EO, I am always amazed at how these black beauties survive. that card would make anyone proud.image
  • eric- that is one super sharp looking example of a very tough card!. did you submit it yourself? or pick it up some where else? in any case enjoy it. are you working on a 71 set? i'm doing one in 7 and 8 and have a bunch of 71's waiting to be sent in should i keep you in mind if by some miracle i score a 9 or two?

Yes, keep me in mind for 71 9s I am not doing the set but am in the market if you happen upon a Thurman Munson or a Reggie Jackson...would also be interested in other star cards but those are the two I most want.

    Thanks.

  • EOMINT,

Did you ever get your highly coveted 1957 PSA 9 Don Drysdale? If not, Superior has one in their current auction in case you participate. Chris Porter describes it as having some "stray print issues," so it may be a matter of buying the holder vs buying the card. It appears fortunate to have been graded a PSA 9. Whattya think?

I recall you once posted a scan of your 1957 PSA 9 Frank Robinson, which I think is one of the most attractive baseball cards ever made.

eric- i'm hoping my muson will get a 7, and my jackson is a weak 8.

    Skycap,

The Drysdale looks pretty nice to me, but then again you dont see em to often...I think what Chris was trying to say is that if it werent for those few print specs it would be a 10.

Any other opinions on how the 57 Drysdale looks?

Even on mag - I have a hard time seeing where the lines are -- perhaps seeing it in person would be more helpful
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Absolutely gorgeous PSA 9 card. Nothing borderline
    about that one. Congratulations.

  • EOMINT (Eric),

After looking at the Drysdale very carefully, I think the "stray print issues" aren't the typical black ink specks, lines, snowy effect or ink blots but rather an irregular area on the left side of the card between the border and his cap bill. There appear to be very small printing surface bubbles, two of which are darker than the others and can be easily seen. It's as if a gum stain had been rubbed out very hard, leaving an irregular surface and perhaps causing the bubbles. At least that's what it looks like. Maybe it was printed that way. Chris did say "stray print issues," not stray ink, so who knows.

As for me, I'm considering the '60 PSA 9 Yaz in the auction. The drawbacks are that it's very slightly tilted, the bottom edge has a rougher cut than I'd like, and the lower right corner doesn't appear as sharp as the others. I'll have to think about this one. The PSA 8 of this was one of the first PSA cards I ever obtained in my BoSox collection, about three years ago, and I've long been looking to upgrade it. What do you think of this card?

Skycap...I love the Yaz RC...bought this one a while back.

  • Eric,

Nice Yaz! It's nice to know I won't have to compete with you for the Superior one. It's the only card in their auction that interests me.

I wonder if 1420sports will go after his long-sought 1967 PSA 9 Rose in that auction. Hmmm.

    Skycap,

The centering and diamond cut on the PSA 9 Yaz just don't cut it for me.

The rough cut is fairly common with this card, though. I'll stick with my PSA 8 for now.
