WTC coins: I could use some advice on a purchase

You might have received the same offer, and I am wondering if this is a good opportunity. A dealer associated with Centesles (Bob Johnson) is offering coins that were retrieved from the World Trade Center, specifically a 1/10 gold coin and a Liberty Silver dollar, both PCGS MS69, and they both have flags and the WTC label on them from PCGS. Apparently there are 198 sets of these available, and the coins are dated 2001. $425.

Then, similar lablel but different date, is the 1 oz gold coin in MS69 at $995.

I don't buy gold, but the WTC label and short supply has me interested. Can anyone offer some insight or reality to me here? Thanks!!!!

  • I find profiting from the tragedy rather tasteless

I, for one, was extremely p/o'd with the offer...
I was on pins and needles, waiting to see what kinda neat stuff would be offered to those "few special customers" selected.....
I was NOT expecting WTC coins. I wouldn't buy one, ever.

As I know there are two groups of collectors here, I'll just add that were anyone to offer me one, gratis, I'd accept.

This subject has been discussed here many times.I think the respones you've already received is the general feeling of most of the board members. It doesn't matter how big the dealer is.To make those coins seem to be worth more than bullion just because they were in a vault at the sight of a international tragedy is wrong.IMHO

My opinion is the same as the rest. Making a profit off a national tragedy is awrong, in my opinion.
  • I dont want to stir up a hornets nest, as making a mockery of a tragedy as HORRIBLE and NEEDLESS as it was is AWFUL, but I must voice a reason as to why I did buy one of these (a while ago, and it wasnt solicited). Something surviving a national/international tragedy the likes of this one (with any luck, NO country will have to face something like this) is truly a miracle. I simply purchased one (to go along with my 'remembrance of 9/11' tatoo) to reflect on this tragedy. I do look at it and hold it often, and the thoughts that run through my head range from PO'd that some insane group of people could actually do this, to being on the verge of tears. It ALSO reminds me of the SELFLESSNESS the NYPD, NYFD, EMT's, and every other emergency worker showed in trying to save OTHERS with NO REGARD for their own lives, and ALOT gave their lives for this emergency. I bought mine with no malice, insensitivity, or thoughtlessness intended. It is simply something to remind me of how truly F'd up this world is...and it also reminds me of how we, as a country, mourned, then got angry, then reacted to this situation. It will always remind me of how people from many walks of life banded together and got a sense of, as the Pledge of Allegiance states, 'One nation, under God...' Again, I do agree with your posts of someone wanting to profit and promote it being unnecessary, but we each have our own reasons for doing ANYTHING. For me, owning something that survived this hellish moment in our lives/history will always remind me of the brazen acts of some (GD terrorists)who deserve to die even MORE hellish deaths than those who perished, and also of those whose bravery went above and beyond human comprenhension...who gave the ultimate effort and sacrifice to save people who had only visions of death to face. It reminds me of those who were saved, so they could go back to their homes and families....saved by those whose families will never be able to see them, ever, again. In short, it is my WTC Memorial...much like the Vietnam Memorial (please dont chastise me for comparing the two, they ARE totally different things, but I hope you know what I mean).
I am reminded of this, between my tatoo and this coin, every day, and we ALL should think of this EVERY day, as who knows WHAT group of knuckleheads will try something like this again...

  • MassFullStepper, I understand what you are saying. I don't find having one of the coins offensive. It is those selling them for a profit that bother me. I would never buy one as that is supporting those who seek to exploit a national tragedy for their own personal gain.

And to me it isn't just those who gained access to them and had them holdered, but PCGS as well for creating such a holder.

  • Thank you Compa.....well, I guess I did ramble..but I DID 'buy' mine on auction..though buyers dictated price...but when some dealers want to SET a price on those coins, then play on your emotions to suck you into buying one... I agree with everyone in that respect...sorry about my rant, the subject hits home as I am close with someone that made it out of the Millenium Hilton (and I have stayed there myself a few times while in NYC) and that hotel is DIRECTLY across the street from 'zero' and the stories I hear...(MFS shudders)...but even if we want one for ANY reason/remembrance, etc...we DO have to buy one to get one....and ebay only has so many, and these 'dealers' grab 'em and then do what they do (though I haven't gotten the solicitation).. I guess it's just another case of damned if you do, damned if you dont.....and wait a minute....a 2001 SAE and 2001 1/10 GAE for $425??? 2001 10z GAE for $995? WOW...this guy DOES have big brass ones.

I have one of the 100 NY Quarters that were given for donations to a charity for victims families. A much better non-profiteering way to remember.

I also am the proud owner of one of the NY state quarters, that we auctioned and sold on these boards to raise money for the NY firefighters fund.It resides right next to my Lincoln Proof Registry set.I hold it in the same regards.
