The "PO01" Challenge. $1,000.00 Prize!! ENDING SOON!

braddickbraddick Posts: 23,975 ✭✭✭✭✭
I've enjoyed collecting extremely low grade, problem free coin, off and on, for the last 15 years or so. I've had success getting many holdered- others are bagged for various problems intrinsic with these coins. Scratches; corrosion, damage that precludes them from getting into Service holders (PCGS and/or NGC). I find it mildy amusing and somewhat baffling though when the follow up comments, when one is shown, is how easy it would be to find or make these yourself. Interesting.

Here's my challenge followed by simple rules:
-Find an Ike that PCGS will holder out as PO01. I don't care if you "make it" yourself (rock tumbler, excellerated wear, ARTIFICAL wear- whatever!). Get it holdered with PCGS as PO01 and I'll purchase it from you for $1,000.00. It can be any date, any MintMark, I don't care. Easy to do?

I look forward to purchasing it from you then. $1,000.00 for a PCGS PO01 Ike. This Contest is valid until August 1st, 2004. I only need one, so it's the first one that is confirmed holdered. But, to make it fair, I'll purchase any and all subsequent PCGS PO01 Ikes for $100.00 each, up to ten.

SIX DAYS LEFT IN THIS CONTEST. WHERE ARE YOU GUYS WITH THE ROCK TUMBLERS?! image

I swear I saw one at Long Beach last fall? It may have been a 2?

I just started laughing when the guy showed it to me.

Have you ever seen this coin?

This Contest is valid until August 1st, 2004

If I send it in today, the coin will likely still be in the grading hopper. Perhaps, August 1st, 2005.

That's actually a valid point. Tell you what, if you have one in submission, PM me and I'll extend the deadline for you. Otherwise, for 1K, it might be worth upgrading the turnaround time other than Economy?

+Tonelover-I love that Kennedy! Get it holdered and I'll pay you $200.00.

+Trooper- Nice try! (I see the evidence of LIBERTY on the obverse rim. That's the tell this isn't a PO01!)

+Grip- I have PCGS samples of Ikes in FA02; AG03 and GD04. I'll post images of them tomorrow so you'll have something to compare. I also have one in PCI that is PO01 but truly, don't think it would cross as the "4" in the date (1974) is a ghost, at best, and I'm afraid PCGS won't see it.

When I was chasing my prize, I used to hate these "I saw one..." stories, but here goes...

I did see a PCGS PO01 Ike some time ago in the display counter at The Coin Broker in Palo Alto. After seeing your contest, I hopped in the car and got down there as quick as I could. As is always the case with these stories, the dealer confirmed that they did indeed have one, but they had sold it a while back.

They're out there, and I hope you find one. What do the pop reports say about this ultra-rarity?

    You are the best!!!

You may wait a looooooooong time to pay anyone off, but I absolutely LOVE your offer because it's going to get many, many people to look at low-end coins a lot diffferently than before.

    When in doubt, don't.

Flamino, the one that the Coin Broker had was an F-02, I know, because I bought it and sold it to Pat (Braddick).

Here's another one out of the tube that's going into the pocket today.
It's a natural wear but looks bad from the closeup and flash.
It's my second worse I have to say.

Well, that makes me feel a lot better! The thought that a classy coin like that had gone to some anonymous collector and not our esteemed braddick was tearing me up inside. Thanks for the correction.

How about some explanation to this type of grade??? POo1 what does that exactly mean. Also, can someone post some photos of an ike like this for comparison??
  • A few years ago, I had an Ike that was a PO 1, maybe even basal state, but spent it. Had to be a pocket piece.....

    It was nasty !!

Pat, this is "crazy talk"! What if some knucklehead has a P01? You're out $999!

P.S. Can I send you my P01 ANACS Chain Cent for the same grand?

    Braddick:

You are a collector after my own heart, and one of the main reasons I keep lurking on this forum. For about four years now I've been working on a U.S. type set of the lowest grade no-problem US coins I can find. I have a 2 cent piece which looks like a vlank planchet unless viewed under maginification at the correct angle. My favorite Walking Liberty half came to me for the princely sum of $2 from Leon Hendrickson at a major show in 2002 (the writing on the 2x2 is his):

    imageimage

(OK -- I paid for this with two XF clad Ikes I got at my bank for face value on the way to the show)

I am an inveterate Barber collector with so many coins lacking full rims that I feel the ANA should establish intermediate grades between 2 and 4 to differentiate, say, an AG-3.0 from an AG-3.3, AG-3.5 and AG-3.7. I can grade Barbers as 3.3 vs. 3.5 better than most here can tell key date AU-53 Morgans from AU-55s. Why should rich collectors have all the precise grading points?

I don't spend too much time worrying about grading services' population reports but applaud anyone who shares my perverse joy in seeing a poorest known example. (Population minus 1?) Best of luck in completing your lowest rated complete registry set!

For grades below 1, the coin must be identifiable only by metal. I have a couple of these (including gold), but haven't yet found one that wouldn't be bodybagged by PCGS.

I wish you the best of luck in your research defining basal state.

You must not like Ike too much. The reward that you have posted will cause nusmismatists, dealers, part-time collectors, pirates, and n'er do wells across the country to subject thousands of Ikes to some of the most horrible abuse imaginable. image

You mean after 140+ days NO one was able to "produce" a PO01 Ike?! You'de think for one grand it would be worth throwing in a $2. Ike into the rock tumbler, shipping it off to PCGS, and picking up an easy 1K!

    Hmmm....image

Cheer up Pat, no one has come with a PO01 Rosy for $100 either (yet)......I'd actually extend that offer for a Franklin Half at PO01 also - $200 for a pair.........imagine, offering 150 times face isn't enough! (Or even 70 times silver). Sheesh.................
