Does PSA grade Broder/Unlicensed cards?

It says on the submission forms that PSA will grade almost all cards found in the SCD price guide, but does this include the Broder/Unlicensed cards that are listed? It doesn't specifically say anywhere that they don't. I have several Broder-type Cal Ripken, Jr. cards that are listed there and I wanted to get them graded and slabbed or even just slabbed with no grade so they match the rest of my cards. Does PSA slab cards and label them even if it won't grade them?

Thanks for any info on this!

The SCD Standard catalog & yearly Beckett does not list Broder cards, since they ae not licensed by MLB or the players union.
PSA will grade cards (& the guides will list) licensed cards by either or both sanctions. The early 1990's Post cereal cards (as example) had generic photos of the players looking like a softball team w/ whited out jerseys & caps, but the players union was in accord (meaning they got compensated) so they are a "legal" issue. If the company wanted to have a Red Sox or Yankee logo they would have to pony up the appropriate money to MLB for those copyrighted logos...jay

Here's a graded example of a card that is also listed in the guides that is a generic looking card...jay

The newest SCD does list some Broder cards without values. Within the description for the sets they are described as "Collector's Issues." Some examples of the sets listed are: Ajax Dog Food, Action Superstars, Action Superstars Series II, Anonymous Collectors Issue, Broder, Indiana Blue Sox, John McClean, Pacific Cards & Comics Big League All Stars, Pro File National Convention Promos, Scott Cunningham, and a whole bunch of others. Although the Willie Horton card above is unlicensed, it is not regarded as a Broder or Collector's Issue.

They did grade a few in the past by accident, or so I'm lead to believe...

That sounds like one of those unfounded rumors. Where's Joe Orlando on this one? image

Well I can confirm that they have graded 1984 Nestle in the past.

Interestingly -- PSA also will not grade 1988 Nestle (although they did in the past....), and the reasons are not really clear...
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Perhaps it's because the 1988 Nestle were also available in sheet form.

Jay - is that an MSA disc? If so, they had a license from at least the MLBPA.

No rumor, straight out fact. The cards were being sold by Grade & Trade, WIWAG, and a few other random IDs (boy do I wish that I had kept those usernames!). Shortly after I made my post here and on the Beckett Boards, the active auctions were yanked. Some auctions were completed though, and unless PSA pursued the winners to buy the cards back, there are a few Griffey Jr. Broder cards floating around out there in PSA cases. And yes, shortly after I had made my post on the PSA boards, it was deleted. image

PURELYPSA - Yes the Horton was licensed by the MLBPA, you can see the logo on the card front. I scanned it to show that it was one of those cards that is licensed but was no allowed to have any team logos affixed to it. So many confuse these type cards w/ Broders because of the no frills look...jay
