USMINT NEW NICKELS w/pics (prelim look at just delv 2004)

well my order came from the mint, and looks like they wrapped all rolls
tails/tails...rolls all appear to have a nic or 2, but ive yet to unwrap any
but getting ready to do so. I did open a bag and those suckers are bright
and pretty, better quality it appears than the rolls...the reverse design
feature (the little eagle) appears to be the problem area for this design..

anyone else look yet?

  • Can we get pictures? I've seen the drawings of the design, but I'd like to see an actual coin...

    That's not a golf club?
  • Man, I was hoping for something a little better looking! Looks as if there is hardly and depth to them. Why can't they make some coins with some releif like they used to? It is nice to see some new coin designs, but they could have done better!

My girlfriend just said with a gasp "Oh no, it looks communist".

Now that is going to go though my pea brain every time I see one, because it kind of does look like it for some reason. Someone please convince me otherwise.image

Bill, thanks for the sneak peek at the new nickel! I guess the future is clear - we'll never again see any reasonable amount of relief in US coin designs. It looks so flat, it reminded me of old aluminum "tokens" that were supposed to look like coins. It just doesn't look "coin-like".

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • I agree not real impressive all that hype for that....YUCK! Geeez they can send a rover to mars but can't make a really nice coin?!?!?!
Maybe the FF...four finger variety for the ones missing the pinky finger (giving it the four finger discount) LOL

Well, I guess I'll have to be the minority, but I like the design.

I will agree, however, that the relief stinks. I know it's more wear and tear on the dies to do so, but could the mint throw us a bone once in awhile?

id kill to see any president fire up an artist the likes of Gaudens to create a High Relief

That looks a heck of a lot worse than I thought it would. What a dreary reverse. There had to be at least 1 person who could have held out for a better reverse prior to issue. An example of trying to save a buck by having such a low relief coin so as to be able to get really high numbers before die failure. What a shame.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

I am truly underwhelmed. You know if lose just a little bit more relief they will be able to combine the Mint and the BEP and just print the designs on the coins.
  • Conder101- "I am truly underwhelmed. You know if lose just a little bit more relief they will be able to combine the Mint and the BEP and just print the designs on the coins. "

I feel the same way. Looking through my coins in a whitman folder, I notice how much better (relief wise)the coins were in 80's and before.

You can almost feel the images on old coins, today they are just plain flat and lifeless. What a dissapointment. I say we contact the mint or our congressmen to see what we can do.

Hahahaha that's like thinking that either of the status quo parties are for limited government, lower taxes and thinking that voting would make a difference!

If voting could make a difference, it would be illegal.

Is it possible that they will improve later in the year. Like the 2003 Lincoln cent with the early strikes losing the tail on the 3. They could get better and I don't believe a bag would be any improvement form the rolls.

  • Ok, is the relief better now? The scanned image made the coin look very flat, so I tinkered with the contrast etc.

I was going to ask why the peace pipe is upside down, until I viewed the design upside down. Then I realized the pipe would've looked like a hockey stick if they showed it rightside up. Perhaps they can add a few more pipes and axes to make a tic-tac-toe board?

Too dammnn many words in the design. Perhaps they ought place some of the mottos around the coin's edge using the collar die. The left hand looks like a cardboard cutout.

Overall I like it....because it's worth 5 cents and can be spent just like a regular nickel.

Ok so I'm sick and I like the new design. I want to see it in person before I condem it.

Also and I will say it again, It can't be a full pipe because it is upside down............. image

Unfortunately, the U.S. mint is in the business of producing circulating coinage at the lowest cost to the taxpayer - not producing beautifully designed high-relief specimens for coin collectors. In the past it seems these two interests coincidentally crossed paths, but I think those days are behind us.
