Note to self about mint sets

Note to self: When buying a mint set from the 50's off of eBay, remember, just because the seller says it's a mint set does not mean it really IS an uncirculated set from the mint. Remember!

I thought a 1953 mint set for $30 was too good to be true. The coins are all nice and shiny but uncirculated? Borderline at best. Just another case of my eBay learning curve. I do seem to be screwing up less as time goes on though! image

a true double mint set in the cardboard holders is a $500 - $600 dollar item.

Lots of sleezeBay crooks remove the BU coins from the older double mint sets and replace them with sliders. Another reason raw coins are dangerous to your wallet on sleezeBay.

    hey rlawsha

don't be lulled into thinking that this is just an eBay problem or just confined to the early Mint Sets. it happens with the early Proof Sets wherever you might find them as well as the Mint Sets. sometimes it's individual coins, sometimes all of them.

UH HUH....That's what I THOUGHT!! I saw one of those things on Ebay, went back and check out the standard price from several dealers, knew it had to be a scam!! Too good to be true!!

Many times the coins will be replaced with true uncs. Mint set coins are usually
of much higher quality which accounts for the huge premium they bring. When
other coins are substituted most of the value of the set can be lost.

I have bought quite a few early mint sets lately when I discovered that coins minted after 1946 could be very nice to collect- I used to be the old school coin collector that frowned on all this modern era stuff. I have learned that when talking about mint sets to make it clear that you are talking about official US mint packaged double mint sets. After-market put together sets are usually of low quality and kind of a gamble. A tip for those looking for original untouched sets is to look for local address labels on the envelope and of course matching toning. mike image

Another thing to watch for is even with the original holders is people selling half of a double set as a whote mint set. Make sure you read the description text carefully.
