Back in the old days when the thalers ruled the world people would sometimes do the same to a thaler. It could be used to smuggle secret messages from one place to another - or to hide pornographic pictures! Two years ago such a thaler was sold on a Danish auction. It was from the 1600s and it still contained the original "paperwork" with hand drawings of what men and women could do in their spare time

At that time such a coin was probably one of a kind - it would have taken a long time to make it. So the coin in the auction is really just an old idea being reinvented - but interesting nevertheless. I wonder if it contained something when it left the mint?

You could hide the certificate of authenticity inside the coin instead of forcing collectors to pay for expensive boxes
