Wow! Look at the bids on this 1942 D/D Jefferson

I think I will hang on to my VF-30 example of this variety (at least until an uncirculated one comes to light!)

The final selling price will be higher.
    When in doubt, don't.
  • How much higher, Dennis?

    Solid:

That depends on whether it's just me who plans to bid again, or both of us!
    When in doubt, don't.

    Bill:

I certainly do remember... but to be honest, I was never entirely sure whether you were kidding with me or not. If you were serious, then I will certainly hold up my end of the bargain!

By the way, I can't tell you what a warm, fuzzy feeling it is to finally have one of those things in my set!! That alone was well worth the cost of the coin.
    When in doubt, don't.

I would love to see a better picture of the coin when one of you wins it.

OK, my last bid (morganvams) has been placed. I'm headed off to bowl in the American Bowling Congress National Championship Tournament later this morning and won't be back until after the auction ends. Best of luck to everyone else in the auction!
    When in doubt, don't.
  • Forget the auction! Good luck in the bowling tournament!!

Final Price -- $705... and it wasn't me.

  • I was keeping track of that auction, and considered bidding.

This is one tough coin, for sure. If I'm remembering correctly, there are
five graded AU58, and a total of five MS pieces in all grades combined (at PCGS).

This piece closed at something like double or more of the CU price guide,
and I could find no other sales of this issue to go by, except for some
lower grade pieces through Heritage that sold in the $30-40 range.

No doubt an MS coin would sell for multiples of what this piece closed at,
but I decided to hold out for the time being. Two years from now, when
no more of these coins have been offered at auction, I may wish I would
    have stepped up! image

A MS-62FS example sold for $1,000 about a month ago. I suspect it could have sold for a lot more!

  • Frank, I have always wondered what nickel that is on your icon...

  • Ken:

My icon is a 1971D MS67FS. I changed my icon about 1 year ago from a 1955 PF68DCAM - perhaps the best DCAM I have from the 1950s.

  • Hi Frank:

Yes, I would have gone higher for an unc, especially in full steps. I've been looking for one of these for a while and just never found one, and went after this one just for the fun of it.

    Best wishes,

Here's mine... and I'm thrilled to have it! (Sorry about the blurry closeup of the mintmark; it's 25x.)

The AU 55 example looks like it has some luster. What a great example.

The 42 D/D is one tough coin, even in circulated ... I have found every OMM picking through rolls, including the 49 D/S, and even cherried a BU 54 S/D ... but never have found this one ... Great coins, all.
