There are some great young stars in the game today who i love watching,(Nash, Datsyuk, Raycroft) but with the impending lockout and the decline in popularity here in the US is hockey a good investment?

Agreed.
And if (God forbid) there is a strike that wipes out an entire season, look out! Hard enough for anybody currently playing to catch some of the all time greats in goals, assists, etc. as it is, but a strike could clobber some card values.

If you buy new to make something back, always sell right away. There will always be something else to attract attention the next day.
If any cards are a good investment (and that's a big chance) it's vintage.
Would anyone agree that Roberto Luongo is the next big thing to Brodeur?
I've been picking up some his Black Diamond RC's and even thought about buying some high grade Zenith RC's.
As far as modern hockey cards being a good investment....
My 1998 UD SPA Power Shift Vincent Lecavalier PSA 10 is currently $6 on Ebay. Forgive the spam just proving a point.

I wouldn't buy anything modern until the current labor situation is resolved (one way or another). If there's a lock-out, you should be able to pick up some sensational deals this time next year.
And dump any Forsberg cards you have while you still can.
