Are Chain Cents Reeded?

ShamikaShamika Posts: 18,781 ✭✭✭✭
I always assumed that the 1793 Chain cent had no reeding on its rim. However, looking at this Chain cent makes me think otherwise.

Look at the enlarged picture. There appears to be reeding visible at 1:00 and 7:00. Is this writing or reeding?

they are not reeded, however, the punch that was used to cut the planchets out of the copper strips could impart the appearance of reeding to them. this effect occurs on other l.c.'s as well,

The edge is comprised of alternating vine and vertical bars, could it be the vertical bars that are giving that effect?

This is what part of the description reads>>>>>>However, as we catalogue this piece, prior to certification, we can see all of the little details of the vine, leaves, and blossoms-a treat in itself, these being interrupted on the edge by sections of vertical reeding.

It's the Naftzger/Halpern piece. Quite sharply struck; full edge. You're seeing the bars of the vines and bars edge.
