Jefferson Nickel TDR Proof

Sorry, this is the first time that I've posted something like this, but I'm excited and need to share the news. Anyone here familiar with FS035? I just picked one up and can't wait for it to arrive! Honestly, I have no idea what this is worth, but who cares. I have not seen this particular variety offered in quite some time. So, when I saw one become available, I made an offer. My offer was accepted and I snagged it this morning.

If you are not familiar with this, the following is from the 2nd Edition of The Best of the Jefferson Nickel Double Die Varieties by Wexler and Ribar.

Description: Class II, Distorted Hub Doubling
Although always referred to as a "triple die", this variety is actually a quadrupled die. Four distinct images, especially on the serifs, can be seen on all letters of UNITED. Strong tripling can be seen on STATES OF AMERICA, FIVE CENTS and, to a lesser extent, on UNUM, MONTICELLO and the right side of the building. Significant doubling can be seen on E PLURIBUS. All spreads are toward the center, increasing from left to right."

Once this comes in, I will try to post some pics.

Look forward to the pix ... it is a very nice example of doubling, or more, in this case...

Here is a group of pics of my example, which I bought raw (but attributed) on eBay a couple of years ago. At the time this coin cost me less than $50, though I doubt you could find one at those levels today.

  • I've got one. Mine has just the slightest hint of frosting on Monticello. If yours turns out to be cameo please let me know, I'd make a very strong offer for it image

Thanks for the comments and pm's. I have a couple of additional questions. First, what's the population for this? My reference guide list it as "Very Rare". image Not the most helpful of descriptions. Plus, I would also like to find a grade spread for this? Does ANACS and NGC publish population reports similar to PCGS? Even better, does/will PCGS attribute this error? Lastly (for now at least), does anyone know where I can find pricing info for this? All of the price references that I have are several years old and only go up to PR65. Any help with this is greatly appreciated.

  • ANACS PR 66's seem to for around $75 on TeleTrade. NGC 68s, some with stars, go from $80 to $140. Mine is a NGC 67. NGC does have a pop report but I'm not sure what the numbers are.
  • ngc census pcgs does not attribute these yet. image
  • The 55 TDR is not "very rare" as far as I have seen. I would guess that this coin has a URS of at least 8 (65 to 125 known). I have seen PRF64 to PRF66 examples go anywhere from $20 to $250. I picked up an ANACS example in 66 for $25 on eBay about 6 months ago. It certainly is a nice variety with a great spread. For additional info on nickel varieties I envite you to visit my site at: Variety Nickels Heres a couple pics of mine...
