Jesse James Shot To Death with Seated Dimes Tomorrow Night...

Hi yo Silver!...I just saw part of a preview of a show due to air on the Discovery Channel tomorrow night.

They were showing a shotgun shell being loaded with Seated Dimes and were saying something about this is how the outlaw Jesse James might have met his fate.

They also showed a long coat suspended and about to receive a blast from a shotgun loaded with the seated dimes ammo but you will have to tune in and see the effects.
(Oh coins and guns I can't wait) image

You mean regular lead shot wouldn't be enough. Ugh. Works for everything I shoot at (with a shot gun that is).

Dimes would cause a lot of tissue damage but wouldn't penetrate deeply. Probably wouldn't be pretty. Would make a big ugly hole.

I worked with a guy that wanted to load shells with dust. He was sort of wierd. I now have his shotgun shell reloader in my garage. Maybe dimes are not that far out there.

    My guess is..
If dimes were used for a close range shot, it would be just like a slug.
No time for the dimes to disperse and slow down because of their areodynamics.

Ever load your own shotgun shells with 6 shot and forget to cut the slits in the wad cup?
Well all day you'd be wondering how come your missing the pheasents at 30 yards until you
you hit one and there's nothing left..

I'm sure it would be an interesting show. I'll watch it.

I only caught part of the commercial in passing but I thought they were talking about someone having threatened to shoot Billy the Kid with the dimes not Jesse James.

Frankly with how quickly the dimes would slow down and spread in flight I wouldn't expect such a load to be particularly lethal unless the barrel was practically right up against the victim. Sounds more like an 1880's version of a bean bag gun. Packs a wallop but doesn't do real damage. On mythbusters they used a 22 cal rifle to fire a lincoln cent into a gelatin coated skull. The cent cut the gelatin but didn't even crack the skull.

Not Jesse James -- Billy the Kid. And let's hope they don't use real Seated Dimes for the test firings!

  • There was a movie some years back in which Billy the Kid shot a Deputy during a jail break with a double barrel shotgun loaded with dimes. It showed the dimes turning in slow motion as they tore into the body. Excellent special effect for the time. I believe it starred Kris Kristoferson.

I bet the dimes would throw a large pattern and be spinning and flying very erraticaly. the only advantade is that a 12 gauge shell will hold about 24 dimes as compared with 12 00 buckshot. Probably be a very effective fletchett round up to 15' or so.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

This was one of the Young Guns movies with Emilio Estevez, I believe. Not sure if it was the first one or the sequel. As I recall, the movie had Estevez's character (Billy the Kid) firing the shotgun loaded with a dozen dimes, and saying, "that's the best $1.20 I ever spent", or something like that. It's been a few years since I saw it. There may have been a similar scene in a Kris Kristofferson movie, too.

The show was on tonight. It was about several theories on the shooting of Billy the Kid. They test shot a 10 gauge shot gun loaded with 18 silver dimes (they showed at least one being Seated). They shot a side of pork that they put a cotton shirt on. The dimes didn't do much damage. Most of them just bounced off. This appeared to be from a range of about 15 feet. Then, they tried the same thing with regular buckshot and it blew some pretty impressive holes in carcass.

So I was right, not particularly lethal. More like an 1880's bean bag gun
