If it is wrong to have coins that are AT, should cleaned coins be AW?

It seems to be such a big deal for coins not to be AT. A naturally toned coin carries high value, however, a dipped or cleaned coin also seems to carry a premium, so what is the difference between AT and AW (artificially white)?
