Very High Priced Carson City Coins

I call to your attention the Southgate Coins ad in this week's Coin World, p. 42-43. It contains a very large number of choice Carson City rarities, at unprecedented prices. A few examples - 1872CC quarter, PCGS VF25 at $8750. 1872-CC dime, PCGS VF30 at $6875. 1873CC NA quarter, NGC EF40 at $179500.

All of these prices are on the order of 2x what comparable coins have sold for recently. I know the market is strong, but is it THAT strong??

  • The 72-CC quarter and dime prices seem real steep.

I know that they are hard to find in an undamaged
condition, but that seems a little far-fetched.
