I'm fairly sophisticated re: gold and even know how to extend my pinkie when drinking tea. But I didn't remember this about the 49 gold dollar excellent post about an interesting coin. I am tempted to purchase it but, I'm trying to stay more focused. RYK thanks for the link.

1849 dollars would be a GREAT thing to collect by die variety and die state. I have one very late die state (with wild die cracks) in my collection and for some time have wanted to build a collection around it. Sadly, I've never pursued it.

I have always been intimidated by the gold dollar. They are so tiny. Rookie thinking, no doubt. I have seen some very neat gold dollars, including one owned by an (anonymous) board member which I think is one of the coolest gold coins I have ever seen (it's an 1855-D Type II dollar).

I have just ordered my first gold dollar and am looking forward to getting it (from Doug Winter/Pinnacle):
