Shipping USPS

I sent 4 coins to PCGS last thursday (my club freebies). I packed them in an Altoids tin, wrapped it with foam, and then in a box the size for mailing a video tape. I had to repagage it because I only used clear tape to close the box. I re-packed it in the same type box but then used brown paper package tape. When I brought it to the post office, they stamped every inch or so of the paper tape and all edges. I suppose to make sure it would not be opened.
I of course sent it registered and insured. I got a tracking number so I could track it online. Well every time I go to track it, I get this message...

Your item was accepted at 11:37 am on February 26, 2004 in FAIRFIELD, CT 06825. Information, if available, is updated every evening. Please check again later.

Shouldn't there be more info for it by now? Man this is killing me! Will PCGS send an e-mail when it arrives?
Thanks, John

Didn't you know that the peppermint in Altoids is known to almost instantly cause horrible dark splotchy toning???

  • You almost had me! I did rinse the container out well and they were in the filips as well. i used the tin to make it a little harder to x-ray and see the coins.
BTW, it was a Cinnamon tin!image

Takes about a week to get to pcgs from there registered. You will probably only get a online update for it when it arrives.

Been down this road before. You probably won't get an update until it is delivered. I would just enter the invoice number in the submission section of this website.

You are lucky to get that much information. Mine usually say..... "unknown tracking number" or something to that effect. Pretty sick feeling the first couple times that happened, but all was really OK.

  • Thanks for the info. I will just have to sit on my hands.

    Thanks again, John

I just checked my invoice numbers and PCGS has already added them to the website. So the countdown begins!

  • USPS will only scan it upon mailing and then upon delivery.

One time I got the coins back and the USPS never updated their info.image I think tracking is a waste of money, register mail will not be lost anyways.

No--they scan and sign for registered packages EVERYWHERE... they don't get lost

Yeah, but sometimes, the on-the-way scans don't show up at all, and other times, only after the destination scan is posted.

"USPS will only scan it upon mailing and then upon delivery"

Not true. Its scanned at every stop. The USPS can track em all, but you can't. Go to your PO and ask them if you are that concerned. They may or may not charge for this service. They can also track a package from the insurance numbers if you ask them to.

  • Well it has been 6 days since I sent the package. It still has not arrived at PCGS or is it on the USPS tracking site. I called the post office to look into it as it should have arrived in 2 days acording to them. They said they will look into it and call me back.
I am starting to get a bit worried about the package. Anyone else know how long it takes to go from the east coast to PCGS priority, registered?
Does the fact that it is registered delay it any?

    Arggghhhh!!!!!!!

No way Registered takes only 2 days from CT to CA. 2 weeks is more believeable.

I understand completely why you are concerned - I've done that 3 or 4 times now. But I assure you that you are completely wasting time and energy worrying about a Registered package.

Do yourself a favor and quit checking the "tracking." Your package is not lost and there will be no problem. It will take it's time getting there....... but as you can see the USPS tracking is a joke - which makes Registered all that more key when sending important packages.

My experience has been that Registered packages take longer (1-3 days longer on cross-country) than first class.image

You coins will turn into pence if left in that tin too long.
  • Update!!!

Just showed up on the PCGS site as arrived! Whew!
    Thanks for all the help.
