I met some really cool people that I would otherwise have never had the pleasure to meet.
I also managed to learn a few things about coins in the process.

It's expanded my senses as a collector, the many people here, with their differnt interests and ways of approaching collecting has really changed how I collect - for the better in every case.

It is a good way to find out information quickly and keep up on trends in the coin field. The show reports are especially interesting because the numismatic press currently does such a poor job of reporting.
    All glory is fleeting.
  • I have found a great deal of people here that are wonderful people, honest and true. Above all that means more than anything...without trust and honesty there is nothing.

I have learned much about coins and even more about the hobby. The show reports give me a glimpse of what is going on in the trenches. I have made friends and contacts here from around the country that I likely would have never otherwise made. I get to see cool coins daily.

I have met like collectors who have given me first shots at coins they are selling, and likewise have met collectors who happily buy what I have to sell.

Much more so is the INFO shared, not to mention the pics shared that now fill my virtual coin library.

But since you ask it's taught me a lot about how eBay works.

Taught me a hell of a lot about the buying process, as well as knowledge about the coins themselves. Together, those two things are worth more than the sum of their parts.

It got me interested in digital photography.

Its made my mouse hand hurt more.

Its made my wife check my history files to look for suspicious behavior.....among other things..like her bursting into my office and yelling, " AH Haaahhhh, I caught you!".....and she then finds pictures of rainbow coins and bust halves.

Its made me more aware of grading services and more accurate at grading.
Family, kids, coins, sports (playing not watching), jet skiing, wakeboarding, Big Air....no one ever got hurt in the air....its the sudden stop that hurts. I hate Hurricane Sandy. I hate FEMA and i hate the blasted insurance companies.

    4) Made me gain 20lbs by sitting in front of the computer for hours....
    5) Become less social with my friends... (nope... sorry... can't go out tonight)..

  • There's a lot I've learned, but I'll stick to the three main things that come to mind right now.

The first is that I've learned to look at coins less as "investments" and more as collectibles to appreciate. The second is I've learned that not all grading/slabbing services are equal. The third is that it has allowed me to personally meet some fellow collectors.

It got me back into collecting, even though I was still actively buying books, maintaining my CW subscription, and my ANA membership. Participating here is how I got to meet quite a few members and acquire some nice coins. It's what got me motivated to start going to the Baltimore shows, knowing I can get together with some folks from here, because I never would have considered going before.

I now have a network of people I can contact when I have a question, and the expertise is astounding. In return, I try to answer the questions which are within my level of knowledge.

I learned that far more people than I ever imagined could be possible in a hobby, are 99% into the money and 1% into the coins.

I got to meet a local dealer who gives me the chance to work behind the table at some local shows. I learned about some good dealers for various coins, many of whom aren't exactly big names.

As 291fifth said, I get to read show reports as they happen.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Consumed a lot of my free time in an entertaining fashion, and provided me with a research/writing project that has lasted five years now and will probably continue into the forseeable future. (Plus I've done a lot of numismatic writing, but I always wanted to someday write a standard reference on some subject, and now I have thanks in part to the help and referrals I've otten from many people here.)

Keeps the old brain active, definitely improves my numismatic skills, shows me all kinds of places on the internet to spend my money, better than betting on the poines or playing the numbers, one of the more fun things I do with my clothes on, a great way to avoid work at my office (Hey, I'm the BOSS . . . ), lots of wonderful pictures to drool over, met a few nice people, got to join in flaming a few others--

all in all, pretty good. Thanks PCGS.

This forum has given me better insight into collecting coins. A place I enjoy spending time to read a look at all the cool coins. Also helps me to understand more about my own collection.
"Freedom of speech is a great thing.Just because you can say anything does not mean you should.
  • The forum has done a lot for me in many areas. In no specific order of importance:

    1) It has provided me with a group of people to share my purchases and collection with, making my hobby a far less solitary one. It's nice to be able to go someplace and talk about my colection with people who understand what I've bought or done, or at least have a basic interest.

    2) It has educated me in areas of the hobby and related fields that I would have never dug into myself, or even known about. The amount of raw knowledge that I have picked up here in six months is amazing.

    3) It has widened my tastes as a collector. If not for the forum, odds are I would have stayed within my collecting of Nickels, and not gotten interested in the Quarter Eagle Indians here on the Lightside, or my collection of Euro coinage over on the Darkside. Two collections I had not even imagined myself starting or even caring about a year ago. I have also gained deep interest in Pattern Coinage, and some day hope to own one or two. All because what I was exposed to here.

    4) It has made me a better buyer of material by pointing me at the many auction houses, and making me aware of the possible pitfalls of buying online with specific series (The Quarter Eagles in specific).

    5) It's made me feel a welcomed part of a community.

This forum has also gotten me way back into collecting. I even became a contributor as a result of Anaconda calling out the newbies. The forum contributes immeasurably to the enjoyment I get out of this hobby/addiction. The ability to post images of new or possible purchases in order to get opinions from people I've come to know and trust... priceless!

I hate to admit ( no I'm glad to admit) that everything, yes everything I know about coins I've learned here.

Been collecting for about a year now and I've been buying everything that piqued my interest, big mistake, well I've also learned not to do that, damn shame I can't get every coin I see.

This year I'll concentrate on one type of coin.

A while back a fellow member ( I'm to lazy to check the thread and get the members name) showed us his Morgans in VF to BU grades, I like the look of that collection and I'm gonna try to fill an album also. Got my first VF coin (1895-O), it's slabbed, I have a hard time telling if a coin is cleaned or not so I'm hoping the forum can help me with that. Let me re-phrase that, I can't tell if a coin has been cleaned or not and I know the forum can help with that.

Oh BTW the forum has also done something for my wife, she now checks the credit card statements as they come in. Been married 15 years, she's never done that before, now for some reason she needs to know much new money I'm spending on old money, what's up with that???

A big thank you to all the forum members for educating this old fool.

Between this board and the NGC board, some really good friends with shared interests, and access to as much information relating to all aspects of our hobby and the coin business as one would hope to find anywhere. Photography, auction insight, collector-dealer etiquette, toning, dipping, attribution, grading points, holders, recommended reading, motivation, inspiration, well reasoned opinion, new trains of thought, exposure to series I don't collect, and some hysterical sarcasm.image Most of all, I've come to appreciate the competition from my buddies with similar tastes (not in the registry, but in the hunt). They've managed to keep the education fun, and to motivate me to become much more active in the hobby. May you all find it as pleasurable a process.
