carry a few "givaway coins" with you

I had the chance to talk to a young, want-to-be collector over the weekend. I wish I had something to just pull out of my pocket and give to him but I didn't. I made a commitment to myself to always carry a couple of things with me from now on should a similar situation arise.
Anybody ever thought of this or better yet, does anybody DO this already?

  • Been doing it since 1998. Hard to say how many coin collectors have been created from it, but in any case it's great to see their reaction.

  • I carry a nice looking 1900 Morgan in a airtite daily just to spark conversation when I pullout some change. These are nice looking coins to the untrained eye and at 10-15.00 a peice ...no great investment. I have given about 4-5 of these away and the reaction is fantasic from adults and children alike. Makes you feel good giving and it is usually a long remebered gift............Nemesis

Given a bunch of commmon date, VG - F Peace and Morgan dollars away. Most think they're worth much more than they are. The perfect suprise gift, for kids and adults alike.

i usually always have buffalo nickels to give away with me........somtimes they are acid treated, but the looks on the faces of the kids and cashiers when they get them is worht it.

I am going to give a little talk to some little ones at school on Friday. I plan to give them each a widow's mite, a mercury dime, and a New Jersey state quarter. Not to mention other things. Giving alittle back to the hobby.

I carry a few Buffalo Nickels with me to give to kids or an interested adult. I also give them to bank tellers and ask them to remember me if they come across any unusual coins.

  • You guys are so cool. I think I might have to try doing this, too. I think this is a fantastic idea.
  • I have considered doing the same... just to spike some interest. However, people whom know I collect just tell me to put it away....

    They just don't get it....

Great thread Joe. I usually carry new purchases around with me (for me) when I'm frustrated at work! image
  • Wow! What a great idea! I'm in!

Funny, I was just reading a back issue of Numismatic today and they were discussing the giving of a coin (with some brief history of the coin as well) instead of candy. Two "threads" on the same idea in one day...someone trying to give me a message?? LOL! image
