Hahahaha it's one of many reasons why some of us became coin dealers!

  • I've only bought 4 coins in the last year and sold many more then I bought.

I think I overpaid for my best barber coins, but no one will sell me the one I like "on the cheap".

  • I do not regret any coin I have bought...I would not have bought them if I had not wanted them...I bought the majority of mine back in 1999 and 2000 and have many beautiful sets that I am proud of and would never sell them unless I needed the money...otherwise they will be given and hope they will be appreciated by family upon my death.
  • 2003 was a very quiet year for me, coin purchase-wise. I am resolved to get it in gear in 2004!

Every week I break the last week's resolve. I used to be flush with cash and all my coins were paid with excess cash. Now I add a few thousand to the credit card and when it hits about 2K, I panic and stop buying. I then get some money to pay the whole credit card off and resolve to start fresh and try to pace myself. After the credit card has been paid off one or two days I start the process over because I now have room on my card to charge whatever I want!! image

    Peter,

Thats me also, Especially after I buy a higher priced item. Then I say, well I am going to hold off a little before buying another, when about that time another comes long, Id been looking for.

Speaking about that, this time I am going to try to have myself in a better position to chase another coin of the same type/date/grade (barber Half) I asked you about prior, I notice one is going to be auctioned in the DLRC Newyork auctions later this year.

Yeah, I have had a hard time stopping before. image Thankfully the situation has resolved itself. I probably won't be splurging till year's end. I decided to spend my coin money on a new projection TV, car, and landscaping. Have to wait to build it up again.

I have cut way down on purchases. My frantic buying of choice SLQ's almost got me into financial trouble. Sold off many duplicates and with the proceeds bought a few other coins I needed to finish off other sets. Now with most of my sets nearing completion, there are fewer coins I need.

My major expense this year will be having my raw coins graded and encapsulated; and the non PCGS coins crossed over. The 90-100 days it takes for Economy submissions are a bit much, but if that's the best they can do, so be it.

I know they have a tier system for certain values of coins... up to $300,... up to $500... the details are vague but I figure that 500 - 750 coins will set be back far enough that I won't be able to afford any coins in 2004...

Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !

  • Well, my problem is that I keep finding these fantastic "once in a lifetime" type of deals. Since I mainly collect early stuff, I justify it by telling myself that you don't come across draped bust dimes everyday (or whatever it is that has caught my fancy). It is a load of garbage, but it allows me to buy just one more coin...

I've resolved not to buy another coin until I get the ones I already own back from PCGS

(unless of course it's a coin I must have)

This has been such a fun thread. Many of us compulsive collector-types are so much alike. I find that as soon as I stretch for a coin that is never available or don't want to pass up, within a day/week/month another coin or coins show up and I start all over again.

It is the nature of our beast to be cyclical and not knowing what lies ahead keeps us guessing and the journey of collecting is what it's all about.

Yeah, this happens all the time. Invariably right after I make a big purchase, another "gotta-get" coin shows up, and I've double-dipped. More than once I've seen a coin show up on eBay or elsewhere and said "Couldn't you have just waited a few more months before selling this one?!"

Most recently was around the New Year. Right after I acquired my MS69 Washington Half for an undisclosed amount, a stunning Pan-Pac half showed up on eBay. I'd been pining for one of these for years, and pulled the trigger. There was hell to pay when the wife found out, but the good news is I got to keep both coins image.
