Some Opinions about type sets

I'm putting together a type set in a Dansco Album and was wondering if all coins should be mint state, or can they be proof and mint state coins?image

If I were putting together a Dansco type set, I'd do the modern coins in Proof, as they are affordable,
the rest in uncirculated to gem unc, or, where the coins are too expensive in Mint State, (such as the bust and No Motto seated coins, and the early copper) nice EF to AU. Basically, though, it's YOUR set, so it's up to YOU!

  • I'm with Baley, Proofs for the moderns. I'm trying to get all 18 of the moderns in proof, I have 12 right now. I'm trying to go AU-MS on all the coins. Most are in lower grades right now, but upgrading is what is fun.

  • Seeing Baley's set is what inspired me to start a type set, I originally had ms coins, but replaced a few with some proofs and they seemed to look better. I think I'll leave them and do as you have advised, Thanks

You can do your set any way you want. I like using proofs for modern coins. Then as many MS coins as possible, and then AU and XF for the early dates.

I got a proof set for my birthyear (1980) for all the "to date" coins, and a 1976S silver proof set for the bicentenial section. Proofs mixed in with MS coins looks great!

Exactly the answer Baley gave you, it looks pretty nice when you have CAM/DCAM moderns and nice classics (as many MS as you can afford, but at some point, even MS is out of the question).

Good luck, show pics of your progress.

I have a mix of PR and MS issues. More proof in the moderns.
