Key date Seated Lib. Quarter

This beautiful 1869 XF40 PCGS graded quarter is offered by JJ Teaparty right now for $1095. Looking at Heritage auction archives it appears to have sold more in line with its retail pricing of about $600+ about a year or so ago.

I love the coin, but the price seems too high, considering it sold at a public auction not long ago (which happened during this "hot" market).

For you Seated lib. buffs, is this coin worth the premium? How scarce is it in XF, and what would be a price commensurate to the original condition that you experienced collectors would pay?

Oh. Did PCGS get the XF40 grade right? 1869 Quarter

This is a really nice coin, and a tough coin to find. It currently trends for $1,000 in XF40.
In this hot market, last year's sell price is now this year's bargain. Call Gail or Liz at JJ Teaparty,
maybe they can work with you on the price. Then again, this coin could be on consignment with them
and their hands are tied on the price.

    Good luck.

Never hurts to ask politely if they can do any better.

The coin looks a tad undergraded as I would have said XF-45, but what's a point between friends. The real issue here is that it looks very original and uncleaned. A very nice coin.

Tyler, that is a wonderful 69 seated quarter, and I agree with Tom, very strong for a xf-40. Looks closer to 45 to me also. Super eye-appeal.

I have been collecting seated quarters for many years, and this is a very, very nice coin. I'm tempted to buy it myself, but I already have a comparable one image

Get whatever you discount you can, but if you need this date, go for it!

Just be sure it is not a circulated proof coin. 1869's and 1866's used to always be tough. But I always felt the proofs kept down the price of the UNC's and circs. Can see that it may not be the case any more. I sold a fully lustrous MS62/63 1866 25c (flat strike) at the ANA for around $1150. It was in an ANACS AU55 holder but had full luster. I think the graders were fooled by the horrendous lack of detail in the centers as is typical on these. Had it not been AT, I could have crossed the coin to a NGC62/63 holder. Coin was fully unc however but a number of dealers passed on it.

  • An 1869 in Choice EF is extremely hard to find. It could take you years to find one.

PCGS has only graded 5 coins in circulared grades.

Just another example of how under appreciated the Seated series is. PCGS has only graded one coin in EF-40 and one in AU-53 ( I sold the AU-53 last fall) and you can buy the EF-40 for $1,000.00+. Talk about value. Imagine if it was a Std. Liberty Quarter???

I think all of the tougher dates in the 1866-1872 range are not going to be submitted unless they are the rare CC's. Note how the pops for the 70-cc are far higher than the 1866,67,68,69, etc. I don't think collectors feel the need to submit these as they are comfortable with their own authentication and grading skills. But a $10,000 1870-cc is another story. Slabbing required on those dates for the most part.

For comparison purposes I'd put the 1869 in circ in par with these other dates (all grades considered) of the same plateau: 1860-s, 1864-s, 1866-s, 1866, 1867-s. Not as tough as the 1871-s, 72-s imo. Like Elwood said, a very tough date in XF. Easier to find in AU/UNC than in F-XF imo.
