Has anyone else been getting this kind of spam?

Lately, I've been getting a bunch of Ebay question for seller emails, like this:

Hi, please add another $15 for shipping to YUKON TERRITORY.

Yes, I have got several of these and I sent 1 to ebay, here was their response:

Thank you for writing to eBay regarding the email you received.

We reviewed your report and found that although the message you received
was made to appear as if it had been sent by an eBay user, it was not.
Generally, individuals send messages of this nature hoping that the
recipient will respond and reveal his or her return email address. These
individuals will then use the email addresses they obtain to send
unsolicited offers to buy or sell items outside of eBay.

If you have not replied to the message you received, we ask that you do
not do so. This will help prevent unwanted parties from obtaining your
email address. If you have replied to the message, please review our
Minimizing Unwanted Email help page at the address provided below. On
this page you will find information on steps you can take to prevent the
    receipt of unsolicited email offers.

I had placed some bids on an '01s quarter a while back and got 1-2 similar emails per day at that time but they were all about '01s quarlters (sic).
  • I'm really glad you posted this. And thanks for providing that info bearcave. I have been getting these and wondering what the heck is going on. I have checked the auction number on every one of them and none of the auctions existed, so I knew some kind of scam was going on.

I got one just like it today.

The buyer, seller and # are all fake.

I wonder how many people hit the link and what it can do to you.

    I forwarded it to Spoof@ebay.com.

It told me that some of the images in the email did not get sent?

There were no images? A little strange.

Many times the intire body of these spam/scam types are the image. The perp often embeds a script into the body within the image, so clicking anywhere on the page sends a response without your knowledge. Most times, if it does happen to open a browser window, you'll get a "This Page Cannot Be Displayed" message.

These responses are seldom sent via your email client, but rather a simple TCP packet that's stored on the perp's server in the form of a text file, matching your email address to all posible IP addresses that exist on his list. A match confirms the valid email, and now they have a targeted market.

IMO, it should be legal to seek out and destroy their databases for these types of practices.
